What is this?

It's the modern world, where humans, yokai, and various other races coexist... One day, Satoru—who works as the apartment manager—angers his secret crush, Mifuyu, a snow woman who lives in the same building. Eager to make amends, he uses a mysterious ring said to help him communicate with yokai. However, he finds himself hotly pursued by Mifuyu, who has suddenly become extremely forward. A socially aloof widowed snow woman and a young adult male who wants to support her. What awaits them at the end of their repeated physical encounters, fueled by the ring's power…?
The Lonely Snow Widow and the Cursed Ring is based on the doujin manga by Puuzaki Puuna. The anime series is streaming on OceanVeil on Fridays.

Stop me if you've heard this one before, but The Lonely Snow Widow and the Cursed Ring follows a young man who's so same-faced that he doesn't even have eyes and inherits an apartment building whose tenants are all yokai women who've acclimated to modern society in this alternate reality. Our MC is kind of awkward around women, but he suddenly becomes irresistible to the yokai women in his care when he finds a magic macguffin — in this case, a comically evil-looking ring — hidden in his deceased father's apartment. With women based on figures from Japanese myth literally throwing themselves at him, his ordinary life is about to get a lot more interesting!
If that accurate yet glib description of The Lonely Snow Widow and the Cursed Ring did not make it clear, this short-form anime is very similar to A LOT of hentai! Moreover, a lot of anime and manga that fit into this description fairly cleanly are widely celebrated, with Everyday Life with Monster Girls, Interviews with Monster Girls, and, of course, the foundation of the genre, Love Hina. This is to say that Snow Widow and the Cursed Ring not only has a lot of stiff competition, but also that these ideas are so commonplace that they've been parodied widely and effectively. Hell, this trope with a hefty seasoning of the ugly-bastard kink was just lampooned to a hilarious and memetic effect in Chainsmoker Cat last season with the landlord character.
That being said, the antics of this first episode of Snow Widow and the Cursed Ring are hilarious in a way that is surely unintentional. The MC is so comically inept at talking to women that he plainly and without an ounce of malice says to the female lead of this episode, Mifuyu Yukino, that she should get over her husband's passing while threatening to evict her if she's unable to pay rent. This guy sucks so hard without being outright evil that I doubt any viewer will be able to map onto him as an audience surrogate.
Snow Widow and the Cursed Ring also falls into the trap that a lot of these short-form adult anime do, where we don't really get much sense of who these characters are and their relationship with each other before they start boning. Not to be an “I watch porn for the plot” guy, but this work would be a lot more affecting if the characters had more of a relationship, or the taboo of dubious consent hook-up was leaned into a bit more. Of course, there are some very fun heart-pupil hypnosis eyes in this episode, and animated hentai featuring dub-con is somewhat rare, so I'm sure folks who are into those themes will enjoy Snow Widow and the Cursed Ring so long as they go into it with measured expectations.

I'm not sure that Lonely Snow Widow knows what kind of show it actually wants to be or how to go about that. Props out of the gate for just making the self-insert Satoru actually faceless, even though it also looks like a cheap shortcut. But it's also taking the relatively cowardly route of being a hentai series full of Yokai to get down and dirty with, but designing them as mostly normal anime women, maybe with some extra bits. But fine, we're catering to the basics of taste with this hentai short, and if Satoru wants to describe Yukina, his huge tenant with powerful ice-control abilities, as a "delicate, beautiful woman," who am I to argue with whoever they're targeting here?
So you'd think helping out a lonely widow who's behind on her rent would be something of a straight line for sexin' up in a show like this, and Satoru's deal seems to be based on wanting to get along with his tenant and help her out however he can. But then this manifests in him callously telling her to get over her dead husband while threatening to evict her—and he has the gall to say he's simply having a hard time communicating? Said communication is nominally supposed to be assuaged by the magic ring Satoru mysteriously comes into possession of, but in practice…it's mind control. It's just straight-up non-consensual hypnosis mind control to make Yukina let Satoru do whatever he wants to her. Which he, of course, does.
Negotiating non-consensual acts in pornography is its own process, and lord knows there's an audience for this kind of mind-manipulation. But Lonely Snow Widow never gives off the vibe that that's what it's going for. Satoru actually thinks he's communicating with Yukina, or at least rationalizes that her giving in to his hot-and-heavy hypnosis means she must be into it. It completely undermines the "lonely widow" element for the most basic shortcut without any personal or emotional connection. Satoru doesn't even get his rent money after everything; what is he doing here?
For all the unevenness in accomplishing it, the sexy stuff is equally uneven. Artistically, there's a good amount of animation in the action, especially in Yukina's massive frosty milkshakes. Plus this show is uncensored, which is neat, but also puts some pretty painful-looking cervix-pounding cutaways on full display. It lends further credence to the idea that this premise is more tuned toward non-consensual gratification than Satoru is being honest about; never mind that he rips her perfectly good tights to get in there! The best way I can quantify all this is: it feels like hentai made by people who have only experienced other hentai, with no input from other stories, mediums, or, you know, real-life interactions. It looks okay, if that's all one needs it to do while paying no other attention, but actually paying that attention simply left me confused.
