Community score: 4.5

Straight on the heels of the emotional reunion between Paul and Rudeus, Roxy and her parents get their turn to make us all blubber. Roxy has had a rather subdued presence throughout the series, so it's not quite as impactful as the previous episode, but her interlude still packed a surprising amount of punch. Once again, the common refrain of Mushoku Tensei echoes throughout this episode: People change, and it's never too late to move on from your regrets.

Roxy establishes herself in this episode as a more down-to-earth figure than Rudeus likes to portray her as. As his first teacher and the person who cured his phobia of the outside world, Roxy has always occupied a rather special place in his heart, but from her perspective, that's just putting her on a pedestal. She's keenly aware that Rudeus surpasses her in talent, as evident from her conversation with Nokopara where she frankly admits that her reputation is overblown because she can't do voiceless spellcasting. When she returns to her hometown, another one of her insecurities is laid bare: She is the only member of her race that can't communicate telepathically, which might as well be a disability in the context of Migurdian society.

What's interesting about this episode is how the Migurd village gives off a completely different impression simply due to the perspective character. Roxy's visit home to a place that is at once both familiar and alienating bears striking similarities to the diaspora experience, especially for those who cannot speak the local language. Even though Roxy did grow up in that village, the line "that's the face they show to outsiders" speaks volumes about how important language is in establishing that common sense of belonging. Notably, her parents are the only characters who speak verbally, in a scene that once again affirms the importance of not leaving one's feelings unsaid.

Although the meat of this episode is drawn from bonus light novel chapters that didn't exist in the original web novel, it doesn't come across like "filler" at all in the anime's context. These sorts of breathers are ideal in adventure stories because they keep the previous locations and their associated side characters relevant even as the protagonist pushes on to new frontiers. The revelation that Nokopora is an old friend of Roxy's is a nice touch that builds connections between the ensemble cast. Also, by beginning the episode with Rudeus anticipating that he'll meet Roxy at his next destination, the anime creates an amusing sense of dramatic irony while also narratively justifying the extended jaunt in Roxy's home continent. One could quibble with the finer decisions about what gets adapted and what gets left out, but I continue to be impressed with the anime's very purposeful sense of narrative pacing.
