I sometimes write entire posts (comedies, in fact) where my usual characters, past and present, are actors on the sets of films or at award shows and such, all with different personalities than displayed "on-screen". I even made one of my canonically male characters be a female in "real life", playing a male "on-screen". Because I've written something similar beforehand, I have a bit more affection for this OAV than I normally would. Still, I much prefer this style as done by me. =P |

It plays something like this: "Haruhi, you're a girl, so you should always be wary that some dude can beat or rape you! HOW DARE YOU PUT YOURSELF INTO A SITUATION WHERE A MAN COULD DO THAT TO YOU, HARUHI." The episode is condescending and belittling to women and even seems to play the victim blaming game. Heck, Haruhi is even demanded to apologize for trying to help others because she "should leave it to the men" who were nowhere around at the time anyway. The show's narration even seems to side against her with no room for her to explain her side. They treat her like a child because she's female. This is a surprise episode from a show with a female main character who usually breaks the barrier between the genders. Aside from that one episode, the show is otherwise in top form throughout. Funny and cute. I decided to lower its score a step just because of that one episode though. Pity. |

It grabs a bunch of potentially good characters and starts stirring up what will eventually be a big conflict. Then, halfway through, it introduces a villain I find to be uninteresting and the story switches to "He's evil and we have to stop him!" There are some points which would be greatly emotional if the characters had been a bit better developed. Also, I had trouble seeing Kazuma as the main character. It DEFINITELY felt like Ryuhou had taken the spotlight in every episode of the second half, and I was more attached to him than any other character. The final battle would have been better emotionally if the characters had been developed a bit better, but what a neat slugout it was to watch in its final (sadly brief) moments. |

This anime is much like the old series, but with MORE plotholes and MORE stupidity, just as you believed that could not be possible. It's terrible, but so terrible that it's hilarious. Also, it's good to know that Turtles were big in Japan as well. |

It seemed like too little was happening in each episode, despite that being untrue. It usually seemed this way when the series began focusing too much on very minor characters instead of the ones it should have been focusing on, and became too preoccupied with the "Shapes" later on. I think it would have been better off as a 13 episode series, though that might have wrecked some of the symbolism and moody touches. I think the characters could have been better defined to fill in some of the space (most of the side-characters don't seem to accomplish much), and I would have ESPECIALLY appreciated some more interaction between Ichise and Ran (this in particular could have made the series great and everything would have been forgiven). Nevertheless, this is a moody, dark anime, and should appeal to those who like those things. I was interested in the main character throughout, and he was well developed. The ending was a bit of a depressing one for me, but I love the sadness. Beautiful OPs and EDs for this show, especially Walking Through The Empty Age (the one that ended the final episode). I like this series more after having reflected on it, but I still say that Ichise and Ran needed more interaction. |
