Independent anime, "Yami wo Mitsumeru Hane", to be screened at Director's Fortnight

Mainichi Shimbun reports that the independent anime "Yami wo Mitsumeru Hane" by Tsuji Naoyuki will be screened at the Director's Fortnight (Quinzaine des Realisateurs), an independent spin-off of the Cannes Film Festival.

Last Year's Directors' Fortnight Screened Daft Punk's INTERSTELLA 5555 and the international premiere of Nasu-The Summer of Andalsia. The full list of films for this year's Directors' Fortnight will be published on the official website later today.

"Yami wo Mitsumeru Hane" (A Feather Stare at the Dark) is a 17-minute independent film illustrated in a very interesting method. Creator Tsuji's "Charcoal Art Anime" process involved the drawing of one picture, which was the photographed and subsequently partially erased so that the next frame could be drawn into the previous frame (re-using those parts of the image that had not changed between frames). Tsuji repeated this process approximately 13500 times over eight years to create the 17-minute black and white film.
