Manga on North American Cell Phones

posted on by Christopher Macdonald
Go Comics Bringing Tokyopop and Others to Cell Phones

Go Comics, a division of uclick / Andrews McMeel Universal, the leading publisher of humor books and calendars in North America, has partnered with Tokyopop to bring content based on a number of Tokyopop titles to cell phones.

At this time the content is limited to wall-papers and simple animations. The products covered are Tokyopop in house titles Princess Ai, @Large and ShutterBox. As in house titles, Tokyopop has easier access to license these titles across a broader spectrum of media than titles they license from Japan or Korea.

The titles are available from Sprint and Verizon. Go Comics will also be making content available from their website, accessible by Internet or WAP browser, towards the end of July.

However Go Comics intends delve farther into this market. They already have a full comic browser for their regular comics and are tweaking it into a manga browser that would allow them to make the actual manga available to be read on cell phones. Go Comics hopes to have this product available in late fall or early winter.

They are also working with companies other than Tokyopop. Content by Fred Gallagher of Megatokyo is expected to be available later this summer.

Information on how to obtain the cell phone content is available from Go Comics' website here.
