CPM Signs with Consortium

Becomes book distributor's first graphic novel publisher

Beginning June 1, Consortium Book Sales & Distribution will handle book trade distribution for CPM and Be Beautiful graphic novels. CPM had been distributing books on its own after leaving Diamond over a year ago.

"The end consumer will see our books more often in more places," CPM Director of Book Sales Ali T. Kokmen said to ANN. "Consumers can and should be able to buy any book wherever they want to, be it their local bookseller, online site, book chain, anime store, or elsewhere. This will make it more likely that there will be more places from which they can choose."

"Consortium has a fine reputation for accuracy and order fulfillment. They maintain a large sales force, larger than CPM can devote to the book trade," he said. "Many entities in the book industry like graphic novels in theory but don't have a good comfort level with that type of material. Consortium understands the place of our work in the grand scheme of literature, which is very comforting."

Kokmen also noted Consortium's "very attractive" relationships in the Canadian market, where it will also distribute CPM's titles.

CPM released 15 graphic novel titles in 2005. In a press release last November, CPM said it planned to release "40 to 60 new Japanese manga and Korean manhwa titles a year."
