A blu-ray from Funi, uh oh. Is there anyone with official word on the actual quality of the upscale? (I've seen some of the horror pictures from their other releases....)

The Tsubasa Season 1 BD is a terrible upscale that has been filtered excessively. It looks like hell just like Funi's other earlier upscales do. Funi have improved their upscales though as of the Ouran BD, they've tweaked their filtering settings so they aren't filtered nearly as much as they were before, so the Season 2 Tsubasa BD will likely look a lot better than Season 1 does. On the other hand, the xxxHolic/Tsubasa movies are upscales even though they were made in HD being that they're theatrical movies. That's a huge fail by Funi. This review of the Funi BD has screenshots that shows they are obviously upscaled. This post has screenshots from an HD broadcast of the xxxHolic movie. |

The upscale and the fact that the Tsubasa anime is a shitty borefest make this prize...not so interesting.

It's honestly amazing how they can be giving stuff away for free yet people still complain. If you don't want the upscale then don't buy it or enter the give-away. Is it not better than the regular version? Be happy they are giving anything free at all.

You would hope, since they should have access to better masters, like original HDs. However, a crappy transfer will just make everything more painful, and you may be better off with whatever equipment you already use. |
