certainly didn't help that the show cut out a lot of things from the source material that people actually liked and wanted to see. I would have liked to have seen more of what Hero did while searching for the mage. better fights would have been nice too

Tamako is KyoAni, right? Those seem like pretty terrible numbers for them.

Not everything they make sells good. Nichijou also sold poorly
