The Air movie is a lot better than the show. It makes the story just seem more well written. The show's ending kind of ruined it.

If AIR had been licensed to R1, believe me, the boards would be all abuzz about it...as other have said, a combination of high licensing costs + AIR being a strange/confusing/"niche" anime=not so likely to be licensed. It's been less than a year since AIR finished airing (he he, get it? ), so it's still "early" in terms of licensing intervals.
Watching only R1 anime is an admirable moral stance to have, but unfortunately, you'll probably be missing out on quite a few good series that don't have much of a chance of being licensed. For AIR and others of the "based on a hentai game but we took all the porno out so now it's just sad girls in snow" (quote stolen from AnswerMan) category, I think it's reasonable to watch fansubs of them, since the chances of them coming to R1 are pretty low.
After all, it seems like the main things getting licensed these days are shows with vampires, ninja, samurai, giant robots, and giant breasts, and AIR lacks these elements (not counting the Summer Arc).
To the OP:

sorry for double post, but does anyone here know of Kaleido Star and Eureka Seven? im also watching those, and they are pretty good as well. however KS is kinda slow to start, but eureka should hit home for fans of mecha junk (like me). |
Use the "edit" button in the top right corner of the post rather than making another post.

Chobits is a decent show, combining cute robots + fanservice and a bit of philosophy about man and machine, but buy some DVDs every once in awhile, k? Taking a look at Teh Rules, one finds that ANN isn't exactly friendly to downloading, especially not of shows already licensed and released on DVD...
Also, Chobits did come before Elfen Lied, and many people have picked up on the Chii-Nyuu similarities; good eye to catch that |
what makes you think these downloads are free?

Maybe because I do a fair amount of downloading myself, of licensed and unlicensed series. . .I'm not condemning you for it, just saying that you might not want to say "OK downloading this now" for every single series you come across in these posts. Sure, you need to pay for electricity and an Internet connection to do it, but either way, we all know that these downloads aren't on the up-and-up. I never said "free," anyway.

My main reasons for watching only R1 anime are:
1. I have no idea where to download fansubs (and NO I am not about to ask here either)
2. I watch my anime almost exclusively dubbed. I have a one year old and its hard to give the TV 100% attention that is required to read subtitles. Atleast not without ALOT of rewinding.
Plus I don't really mind giving what money I can to the companies that bother to license and release stuff I am interested in as long as its reasonably cheap. ADV got most of my extra money last year with all their thinpaks.
Why would the licensing costs for AIR be so high though?

Ah, these are also very good reasons...
This is only rumor, but I've heard that KEY, the company who produced the AIR game, is asking for a massive amount in licensing fees, perhaps because they might not want their stuff exported overseas...asking for an obscene amount is akin to saying "We don't want to sell the license for this series" without actually saying that.

Just wait for all the DVDs to be released, then I'm sure we'll hear something about the movie. Funimation will probably release it, unless it winds up being some Evangelion-like situation where another company gets the move continuation. I'd guess the FMA movie won't come out until sometime in 2007, since the last DVD will be released around the end of this year by my estimate.

the movie (ok i downloaded bad me ) was great. i loved it. however, i do plan to order it online if i'd have to wait that long...
