Well, dictionaries describe usage... so it's usually "people who didn't look up the definition before assuming it meant something else and using it that way" who lead to definitions changing.

I'm not accusing anyone in the case of this example, I'm just saying that's how it would happen when it happens these days.

Nothing to be confused about in this case either... The last chapter was released in november and the article says and I quote: "The next installment of the manga will be published in the March issue, which is scheduled to ship in Japan on January 24". That means they aren't releasing any chapters in december and releasing in january instead.

Just FYI - Fortnightly is the standard word on this side of the pond for describing a 2 week period. I'd never heard bimonthly to mean once every 2 weeks until I started reading US websites and getting horribly confused. Over here, bimonthly is solely used to mean once every 2 months.

Less Natsume is a bad thing. I hope Midorikawa isn't cutting back because of bad health or anything like that.

My main reference for fortnight is pre WWII British mystery books. I gathered it was an extended period but did not realize it was two weeks.

Even dictionaries give both definitions unfortunately.
This is a case where dictionary drift may be a good idea.

To be fair though that doesn't mean anything because the series has taken breaks before where there have been months where Natsume was not published.

Anyways I also hope this doesn't mean that Midorikawa is experiencing poor health.

I also wonder if the Nyanko Sensei spin off web manga was too make up for this (although while cute it doesn't take the place of Natsume Yuujinchou for me)

You got that right. Unless the page count has been doubled to compensate then this is tragic news.

Also, with this news a fifth anime season is even further away than before. My heart weeps.

How do people mistake bimonthly with semimonthly?

That's bizarre. I've never heard of bimonthly to mean anything other than occurring once every 2 months.

Yes, I'm very confused as to why there is confusion here.

Where I work, we have to use these worlds all the time and semi- is always "twice in a period" and bi- is always "once every 2 periods"

I too am unfamiliar with the confusion

Yes, bi-monthly's definition of "twice a month" should be made archaic, because we already have the word 'semi-monthly' for that. Would clear up a lot of confusion.

In New Zealand we use 'fortnight', same with Australia and Great Britain.

(Edit: whoops, fixed it.)

But we don't use the term "bi-monthly" because it is so useless and almost always has to be qualified. Our news reports just say "twice a..." or "once every two...".

http://dictionary.reference.com/browse/bimonthly
Quote:
adjective
1. occurring every two months.
2. occurring twice a month; semimonthly.

In this case it's #1, though I think everyone's figured it out already.

I heard about this a few weeks ago. Sad since we don't get many tankoubon releases a year (maybe 2? 3 max) and this will probably decrease the rate to 1 volume a year. Still, it's better than Midorikawa sensei overworking herself.

There's probably a lot of things going on with Natsume. In August, the signing event in Ikebukuro was a bit of a catastrophe due to how it was organized. The genga exhibition is currently in Osaka and will be in Fukuoka later in the year. No word about a signing event in Fukuoka even though Sensei lives in Kyuushuu, so I think it's pretty safe to say that she won't be appearing publicly again for a long while, if at all. (Thank goodness I was able to meet her at the event in August, even if it meant pulling an overnighter in a garage with a hundred other people in the summer.)

I missed that this was in Osaka (when I was nearby in Kyoto). I am so disappointed. Sad

I even had a day (on the 29th) that I could have easily gone.

Yeah, you're right... At least we can hope that this gives Midorikawa enough rest between chapters for us to expect release every two months and if that's the case, a guaranteed release is never a bad thing Very Happy

Awww!! That's too bad. The exhibition is quite breathtaking. I was just in Kobe over the weekend but unfortunately didn't have the time to go.
