I never seen it but I thought the main character was Doraemon? Not the kids because you never see them on merch, etc. and they even talk about the cat.

Also I don't get One piece or Dragon ball (if they are talking about Dragon ball not Z.) No aliens, you can either save the world or be lazy, plus you run into dinosaurs and friends. The other you end up doing whatever you want and be a pirate. Tons of friends and a body that stretches 'all over.'

There isn't a difference between Dragon Ball and Dragon Ball Z! Dragon Ball Z is just the name the animation studio decided to give to the timeskip, the original source doesn't make any distinction!
The problem with Dragon Ball is that Enemies would always come to try and destroy earth. Also you would die a lot of times.

One Piece is the problem of being chased for life and all the time.

Someone I wouldn't want to be would be Guts from Berserk; he lives one life I would not touch with a barge pole.

Death Note, too difficult to discern who is the protagonist and who isn't

Wrong. You're going off of the misconception of what a protagonist is, which people seem to do with Death Note ALL of the time for some reason.

The protagonist is just the main character, Light Yagami. It's got nothing to do with whether or not he's a good guy.

Nothing much, but Nobita (the actual main character, not the robotic cat himself) is perpetually bullied and does awfully at school. His immature personality doesn't help matters. And he turns out to be such a screw-up as an adult that eff's up his family's social standing for generations, which is the reason Doraemon is sent to him in the first place.

Guts may win the anime grand prize for World's Worst Childhood, that's for sure...

I have read so much manga and seen so much anime that it's hard to pick. Any series with a major downer ending, for sure (Texhnolyze, Gilgamesh, etc.), but even before that... I think it would be easier to choose a protagonist who I'd rather be. It's a smaller list.

"Which anime would you not want to be the hero of?"

Just throwing this out there, I would not like to be Mitsuki Koyama from Full Moon wo Sagashite. ;-;

    Guts definately takes the cake
Then Johan Liebert especially since spoiler[we can assume his mother gave him away]
Then the world of Black Lagoon...seriously, Roanapour is an absolute hell hole

Actually I don't know why Crayon Shin-chan is in there?
Everyone is talking about Doreamon.
That is something I can imagine.

Nobita that get's bullied etc.

But why Shin Chan? I mean I do want to be him. 0.o

There's a very good reason why it has its own subfolder on the WallBangers/Anime and Manga page on TV Tropes. One sentence on the Headscratchers page for that series sums it up best: "Wouldn't having a single competent military tactician or strategist have saved 7 billion?"

Fate Stay Night. Becoming a man made of swords does not sound pleasant.
