@FireChick has the right of it, the manga addresses all of your complaints about a lack of scope, worldbuilding, high stakes, etc. There really are not very many "black hat" villains in the series - it's a sprawling political road trip, and moral shades of grey abound. But honestly, this all sounds a bit contradictory - you rag on the review for overly comparing to other, similar series (historical josei fantasy), but then turn right around and do the same (otome game-based stories). There might be something to your point about too many references in a review, though - it is bound to leave newer fans confused. If you're genuinely interested in seeing if the show appeals to you, then maybe watch the streaming/single-episode version, at least through either the big chase sequence (spoiler[ep 5-6 or so]), or skip ahead, and check out the Earth tribe alternate-POV standalone episode (spoiler[ep 15, according to the wiki]). The latter especially has a pretty good side story that hints at some of the kingdom's / region's politics. |
