The original anime followed the manga's story, but not only did it change up the episodic chapters from the mange, it added several competent fillers to up the card count (with CLAMP's support) to make a full deck of cards.
With the new manga continuing the story of the manga's 19 cards, I'm hoping this anime does the same by continuing the original anime with its 52/53 cards. |

They're going to remake the entire 70 episodes series. I'm calling it.
Big announcement usually equal an anime adaption but an adaption for the new manga has already been made clear so this big announcement in December probably gonna be something different. |

As a note, the article doesn't mention a TV anime specifically. No new news has been announced other than the fact that CCS is getting a new anime project. It's still up in the air what format the new anime project will take. |

One of charms of classic series is animation style. If they managed to get good writing but screw on animation it would be fatal mistake. Thus the chances are slim to get the anime in fully 2D. This is the era of CG animation. See how Sailormoon Crystal ended could be on CCS too. |

Have they ever released it on BD in Japan?

Yes, which you can verify by Googling your question and seeing the results. It might have been theoretically possible for NIS America to go to the trouble and expense of remastering it for their recent Blu-ray release, but they didn't because there already existed one.
