Just because multiple companies are in on the ground floor doesn't mean Blu-ray is anything like the VHS, FDD, CD, DVD, MP3, etc. All of those technologies were easily licensed to just about anyone who could come up with the relatively reasonable royalty fees and contract terms. Blu-ray (and HD-DVD, for what it's worth) operate on a completely different scale; if you're small time then you're nobody in the HD media world.
During the VHS/Betamax war we had tons of porn on VHS and virtually no porn on Betamax. Oh, but that was just a coincidence apparently. Then during the Play Station years we've had zillions of adult games come out in Japan on various flavors of Windows, but not on any Play Station system. Oh, but that was just another coincidence too. (Oddly, you can show someone being stabbed in the breast and call it a kid's game but if you show somebody merely touch a breast it's suddenly an adult game.) And here in the HD era we have lots of sources for adult WMV's but virtually none for Blu-ray (or HD-DVD for that matter). I'd say that between Sony and Microsoft, Sony is the more restrictive player here, by leaps and bounds.
The American porn industry is right up there with Hollywood and the computer gaming industry in terms of total revenue; if there is a system worth supporting they can probably afford it. Besides, if your technology is so complicated and temperamental that only a handful of duplicators will ever be able to support it then you don't even need to spell out censorship terms that ban anything; your unreasonable production terms and insufficient production supply will do it for you. |

I'm pretty format neutral as far as HD-DVD and Blu Ray us concerned as are most early adopters as can be seen here at http://www.avsforum.com/avs-vb/
Most of us have bought both or neither formats, and will say that the quality for the two formats are fairly equal in regards to HD content. Here is a brief summary of what I have gathered from reading the AVS forums regularly. It is a fact that HD-DVD had a runaway lead throughout most of 2006 leaving Blu-Ray in the dust. By late 2006 Blu-Ray had a huge push and gained an incredible amount of lost ground. Neither side looks like they will disappear anytime soon. The price difference for the players is probably the biggest difference. You can currently get a slick Toshiba A2 for under $400, while Blu-Ray players begin at $600 for a PS3 or around the same for a first generation Samsung. The Toshiba's are amazing at upscaling standard def DVDs into 1080 resolution. There is also a rebate that includes 5 HD-DVDs with any Toshiba purchase IIRC. Despite rumors, the PS3 has been bought by many as a Blu-Ray player despite it's current lack of upscaling. It is one of the only players that currently has (the maybe overhyped) HDMI 1.3 and main weakness include machine noise and lack of an IR remote. It's audio visual capabilities (unlike the PS2 DVD player) are top notch. The amazing Toshiba XA2 has dropped in price down to an affordable $600 and might be the best standard def player out there. There are reports that it upscales as well as the legendary Crystallio II video processor which is no small claim. This most likely will be my next player. As far as software is concerned Blu-Ray is still the big anime winner. Disney (Ghibli) has said that they are going exclusively Blu-Ray and will not produce any HD-DVD. Sony will also release their anime titles in Blu-Ray and not on HD-DVD. Most likely Geneon will side with Blu-Ray and will not release HD-DVD.. This new news shows us Bandai is open to both formats. Gonzo is also open to both formats. I believe Freedom is the first HDDVD anime title which has yet to be announced on Blu-Ray which already has a number of anime titles. The conclusion that most of us AV fans come to is the wait and see, no clear winner approach. The LG combo player is a great gesture, but at $1200 you are better off getting 2 nice separate players. I would recommend anime fans to take the Blu Ray route in regards to title selection (Japan and US share a region code) but personally wouldn't mind if either side wins. I will just toss my other format HD player in between my LD player and Hi8 deck. |

The Freedom OVA discs will be combo HD-DVD/DVD discs. That means you can play the disc in a DVD player and get the Standard Definition (SD) version. If you want to watch the OVA in High Definition (HD), you need a HD-DVD player to access that content. Hence, if you do not have a HD-DVD player, the discs are effectively plain old R1 DVDs. However, if you have a HD-DVD player, it's a HD-DVD disc. |

The only thing I diss about HD-DVD Combo discs are the excessive price due to adding the extra DVD-5 side into the disc.
It's no wonder HD-DVD (despite having a solid lead throughout the end of 2006) will take massive damage throughout the end of the year. Content is KING and the software side declares Blu-ray a winning lead over HD-DVD by 2:1. Expect that number to reach 3:1 once Casino Royale gets released on Blu-ray. |

I doubt they could really sell this even if Otomo was actually involved in the production beyond a superficial level. Forty bucks for a single episode is just ridiculous, no matter how many extras there are.

Sure it is, you just aren't aware of it.
Not even remotely close, it's more like the revenue from the anime industry. The American porn industry has been in a massive downturn since the popularity of the internet. Traditional porn media doesn't sell much anymore, as internet downloads have long since replaced it as the #1 source of porn. As an aside, this week marks the first North American HD porn releases, and they're on both formats. |
