I will be so happy on the day the anime companies begin to release anime like any other TV series in the US: one case, usually no more than 6 DVDs, priced (although this is probably too much to ask) at an average of $50. I think anime would sell so much better under those circumstances.

That's what I've always been saying! I mean, you'd think they'd figure this out by now, but no, they still insist on doing things the other way! Evil or Very Mad

But yeah, I'm probably just going to do what I always do and wait for a box set or something, or just wait for it to be shown on TV sometime, hopefully on a network that I actually have.

But uh...

Anime doesn't make enough money to do stuff like that...

(meaning that that kinda release scheme is about the equivalent of taking it up the ass... especially for expensive licenses)

At least, I'm assuming it doesn't.

But hey: I could be wrong.

Hm... with no mention of 'Artboxes'... well, this'll be one I wait for the complete set to come out... with nothing to store the DVDs in, it'd be annoying to have them sitting around loose... not too many series I'm willing to do that with... though Bleach is one of them, the Death Note manga is superior to the anime, so the DN anime is NOT one of them... artboxes or die...

"Just as Planned! Just as Planned! Just as Planned!!"

Sorry, I had to do it. <_<

But w00t!! Collector's Edition!! I will definitely be buying those... they're kinda expensive, but this is Death Note we're talking about. I will buy them for sure... Ryuk figure! Very Happy

Also, just as I expected.. first DVD, 4 eps... and the rest will have 3 episodes for sure. For a total of 12 DVDs. And the last DVD might have the special that will air in japan in a few months (Depends on how long the special will be.. if its a half hour, it'll be included in the last DVD for sure, if it's longer than 30 mins, they might release it as a single DVD).
Also, as I expected, they will be releasing it monthly. Which will take exactly one year to release the whole series.. So if everything goes well, the last DVD will be released september 2008.. one year and a half after I saw the ending. <_<;

Just... as... planned.

It looks like most people's fears have come to fruishion Mad. The English dub sounds terrible! If light sounds this bad, I can only imagine what others sound like. As for L... I can't make my mind up because I can only hear his voice clearly for 3 words. I'm soooo disappointed, ah well... subtitles it is then.

My thoughts exactly.

Here's all the figurines out so far (The Japan ones at least, I hope viz will stick with these)

Death Note 1 - Episodes 1-3 - Includes Ryuk Figure
Death Note 2 - Episodes 4-6 - Includes Light Yagami Figure
Death Note 3 - Episodes 7-9 - Includes L Figure
Death Note 4 - Episodes 10-12 - Includes Jealous Figure
Death Note 5 - Episodes 13-15 - Includes Misa Amane Figure
May 23: Death Note 6 - Episodes 16-18 - Includes Rem Figure
Volumes scheduled to be released:

June 27: Death Note 7 - Episodes 19-21 - Includes Soichiro Yagami Figure
July 25: Death Note 8 - Episodes 22-24 - Includes Shidoh Figure

~~~~~~~~~~
so now to my question
Will there be anything special in the collector's edition besides figurines? (Like making of, etc.)
*starts saving up money for them* Laughing
While it's feasible (and has been done) for sub-only releases, it's not only impractical, it's just about impossible for series that are dubbed. Studios use sales from earlier DVDs to pay for dubs on later DVDs. It's been said numerous times by numerous companies just about every time someone brings this up.
I'm sure Viz will release box sets somewhere down the line, but if everyone waited to buy those boxsets the individual DVDs wouldn't sell and then there wouldn't be any boxsets anyway. Not to mention that a failure that big on a series as high-profile as DN could be the death of Viz. Of course, people are going to buy the DVDs, so that's not really a problem, but, you know, sometimes people need a reality check.
And I feel for all of you that are going to get wallet-raped on this. ): If I was a DN fan, I'd definitely go for the downloads.
...I wouldnt be getting too excited about those figurines, mind you. If they're the same as the japanese ones, they're bloody ugly. I'm the sort of person who jumps and screams at the sight of any Death Note merchandise (with joy), but I definitley would be passing up on these figurines.
I have to agree with you. The english dub is ABSOLUTELY TERRIBLE!!! This sounds like some nerd out of Fruits Basket. He must have fruit in his head. Subtitles for me then also.
FYI, the 6 dvd thing is usually done for 24 episode series, or for 26 episode series who licensing costs are low enough for it to be feasible.
Given Death Note is very popular in Japan, and 37 episodes long, a longer dvd release is a better idea.
Anyhoo, the cost per episode should be pretty good, seeing as VIZ's 24.95 dvd's tend to have 4 episodes each, compared to the usual 4 episode dvd for 29.95 from other companies like Geneon and ADV [pretty much all of VIZ's bilingual dvd's are 24.95].
As it's a shorter series then Prince of Tennis and Naruto, a direct to 13 epiosode boxset release wouldn't work as well either [it won't have a tv airing long enough to support that kind of multiyear release, and unlike Naruto, isn't aimed enough at younger viewers to merit a dubonly and a uncut boxset release at the same time].
Anyhoo, what this means is a decently priced dvd edition for the time being, UltraSwank actionfigures and special packaging for uberfans at the usual price for an LE's. Then once the release has gone through the normal schedule, if it's popular enough to merit one, we'll eventually see a dvd boxset of some sort [though don't count on it- not everything gets one. And the regular release means you get all the nice coverart :)]
