So, are there any new "straight" (re: no powers, no sci-fi, nothing out of the ordinary) moé slice-of-life shows this season for those of us suffering serious Minami-ke withdrawal?

New season of Hidamari Sketch is coming but the subs aren't out yet and yes, I miss Minami-ke too. |

Chi's Sweet Home. Granted, the episodes are only 2 minutes long, but it fits the definition; except a vague possibility that we, the viewing audience, hear the cats thoughts counts as out of the ordinary. |

Special A was a lot funnier then the ANN previews made it out to be. It's got a fantastic cast, several borderline psycotic cuties, and pro-wrestling wannabe high students. It makes for a nice mix, and is worth a second look.
Macross= Win. Geass= Dissappointment, but will most likely improve soon. Kurenai...I think I saw this one already, back when it was called "Red Garden". Vampire Knight...what can I say, I like bloodsuckers, and anything would be an improvement after having Rosario + Vampire inflicted on us last season. XXXholic...will I get flamed if I said I like the manga better? Still a great show. Kanonkon= Pretty sure she raped him at the end of the episode. The kiss was also one the creepiest things I've seen in a LONG time. Gives a new definition to the term "swapping spit." ToLoveRU= If you like your anime dumb, with lots of T and A, this one's for you. Needless to say, I'll can't wait for the next episode! |

What the hell else am I supposed to think when the Upcoming Series guide says 4-11-08 and I didn't realize it's just a special advance broadcast of ep 1 because unlike some people I don't have the time to memorize the goddamn Japanese TV Guide and I am staying up until like 2 am writing these preview articles and watching every single episode of everything including stuff I might not really like I know you mean well but geez you are one irritating stuck-up know-it-all. But I guess that applies to most of us in the hobby.
Nah, I think even Holic-holics will admit that the anime is just a watered down version of the manga's style. I know I do. |

I haven't seen all of Red Garden yet, but I think I've seen enough of it to say that I didn't really see this comparison that you're making. True, Kurenai has something strange going on physically that's not really covered in the first episode beyond hinting at it, but that's nowhere near Red Garden territory I think. Just because there seems to be some kind of secret organization controlling things behind the scenes, I think it's too early to making blanket comments about similarity. Lots of shows feature similar ideas, but implemented in different ways. If anything, I would say Kurenai reminds me a bit of Guardian of the Sacred Spirit, just set in the modern day. At least in regards to what I gleaned from the first few episodes of that series. |

Why the hell are you people finding (Kanokon) Chizuru talking from inside Kouta creepy? It's been done before....several times.

It was actually the art style I was referring to. The show just has a very similar feel to Red Garden, especially with the backgrounds and character designs. |

I don't understand all the Kanokon and Zettai Karen Children hate. Zettai-something is nothing more or less than a mixture of Inukami! and Powerpuff Girls.. both of which are/were great hits. Add Hirano Aya goodness and her weirdo but refreshing comments to it, and the show with the too long name comes out.
As for Kanokon, sure, it probably appeals to only few casual anime fans.. but not because it's especially weird and "disgusting" (wtf) .. but because it's nothing more or less than your usual and generic ecchi/comedy series - every season has them! Kanokon in particular is the ecchi/comedy with a fox spirit girl (read: generic kitty eared lead female) with overdrawn bodily features (read: generic big bouncy boobs and generic high screentime panties). The only difference to other shows like that is probably the -as one of the reviewers called it- borderline porn. Is it something that one of those three billion Naruto, Gundam and DBZ fan would like while checking out another series for once? Of course not. But is it something a generic-ecchi/comedy-fan would find refreshing because in 99% of those series there is not even a single freakin kiss between the 2 lovers in 100% of their episodes? Why yes of course. |

This likely has to do with the fact that the director (Kou Matsuo) is the same for both Kure-nai and Red Garden, as well as having the same character designer and chief animation director (Kumi Ishii) and color design person (Yuichi Furuichi). Story-wise though, I don't think Kure-nai and Red Garden are going to have much to do with each other. |

Having read 5 chapters (none of which has been animated yet) of the Kure-nai manga I can say that Red Garden is completely different.

As Patachu said, this is a pretty common opinion. But I think the anime works well along with the manga. The Kei season will be different for me because I have read all the manga available in English and thus won't be seeing the stories for the first time in the anime, like I was with the first season. It makes for a significantly different experience. I really love this season so far. Second seasons for two series I really enjoy (Code Geass and xxxHolic, even if I am very critical of the latter and may become so of the former depending on how things play out), an adaptation of a manga I really enjoy (Vampire Knight) and an adaptation of a manga that I haven't read but want to (Special A). I am a happy fan |
