No, this is definitely not the case. This dub is recent, circa this year, from what I heard. Recording is in fact still going on, and it's being dubbed in Canada. 4kids has NOTHING to do with this. |

So Pretty Cure is making it's way to my dad's land Canada - not bad, mahou-shoujo series make me nostalgic, still a classic base of my anime fandom and it will sprout new fans again. In Germany we got (more or less) lucky in 2005 where they broadcasted the first season at least, before discontinuation.
The funny thing is - same with Sailormoon in the 90's - we're pretty lucky when it comes to changes such as names. They left them unchanged and even reproduced the catchy opening (though in a mediocre fashion) I thought things had changed in the states at least - the Sailormoon days are far gone afterall, as if the young ladies of today would mind hearing Japanese names. Haha, not that I ever enjoyed Pretty Cure much but considering the Canadian adaption will be altered, I'm a tiny bit proud of the German reproduced Opening with it's embarressing lyrics: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ysOya9KU3E8 |

Assuming that they're aiming for a younger audience, I think this is fantastic news. Almost brings things full circle with Sailor Moon's initial success in Canada over ten years ago.
It would be great if Toei keeps localization to a minimum. Of course, even if they don't, Pretty Cure is such a long series that there will be room for improvement later on down the line if it is successful. |

Either Toei or YTV paid for the dub, which was done in Canada from what I hear (probably an ocean dub since they were the ones that did the other recent Toei show, Powerpuff Girls Z). And the chance of it coming to america entirely depend on how cheap Toei would sell it and/or whether it's a big success on TV in Canada. |

4kids had nothing to do with cardcaptors either, but it didn't save it from sucking. The real question to ask here is what magical girl brought to the west has ever gotten decent treatment not even to say "good" treatment? Then the next question to ponder is what anime with name changes has been any good? |

I still regard Sailor Moon as one of the best animated programs shown on Canadian TV, and that includes the localization.
It's a simple fact that kids will relate more to names that are relatively familiar to them, rather than foreign, exotic names. Natalie and Hannah are a rather close fit. It's when they change entire story arcs or remove all weapons that it gets out of hand. As long as they do as Sailor Moon and keep the story (more or less) intact, I don't think there'll be a problem, and the show might even become a success. There hasn't been a show like Sailor Moon, that caused a whirlwind craze up in Canada for girls (and a good number of boys for that matter), for a very long time. As much as you all would like to moan about this, it's a show aimed for kids and should be treated as such. There's no content I can think of that would be offensive (besides the image of an anime David Bowie of course), and the plot is relatively simple as is. Besides, regardless of the possibility of a Dual Language DVD release (or a DVD release at all for that matter), there's always the uncut official release on Crunchyroll. |

I agree. As long as YTV has the sense to put this series on weekday afternoons or Saturday mornings rather than Bionix, this series' success will be a very positive thing.
And when Toei localized Sailor Moon S and Super S, they kept the original music in. We can at least hope for that much in their adaptation of Pretty Cure. |

Am I the only one who really doesn't mind name changes in a series like this? It's a kid show, and it's supposed to be set in modern-day _____, right? It's not like their names are essential to the plot, or there's a sense of foreign-ness that simply must be preserved. (Like with something like Full Metal Panic, or Naruto, respectively.)
Besides, what kid doesn't love having the same name as a superhero? Not that many Canadians named "Nagisa." Ha, maybe with this my Canadian friend will have a new pop-culture nickname aside from "Hannah Montana". :B |
