You and I will probably never see eye-to-eye about Cross Ange, and that's fine. Your interpretation of Cross Ange is valid, just as mine is. You see exactly what the creators are attempting to portray: a dark revenge story. I'm reading between the lines and seeing what kind of viewpoints the creators could have possibly had to create a story like this.

@ Whiskeyii : Reading between the lines is your problem. Unless you're the author, it's very easy to read things that simply aren't there. You have to be careful when "reading between the lines". The only sure way to know what the motivations of the authors were is simply to ask them. When they come to conventions. A simple and direct question : what were you aiming for when you made Cross Ange ? An attack on womanhood ? A rape porn fantasy to justify real life rape ? Otherwise what you see as the intention is simply a fabrication with no real substance.

Your interpretation of the anime is not as good as mine. Mine is based on what I see in the anime. Your's is based on inventing what is simply not there.

Wow. Wow. You honestly just said my opinion is wrong. Congrats, I've never actually seen anyone flat out come and say that.

Anyways, my opinion is just as valid/"good" as yours and based on Death of the Author vs. Authorial Intent*. You see exactly what the creators present: a dark revenge story. And I can see that too--if I turn my brain off and stop thinking (note that I am NOT implying anyone who sees Cross Ange that way is braindead; it's simply how I operate when watching this show). As a result, it takes a great deal of effort on my part to separate the sexism and "playing suffering for fanservice" angles that I see from the show--they are just that blatantly obvious and in-my-face about it. But it would probably take the same amount of effort for you to see Cross Ange from my point of view.

That doesn't make my interpretation any less or more valid than yours; it's simply different, and probably irreconcilable.

*Want an non-anime example? No matter how much Stephanie Meyer tells me that Edward watching Bella while she sleeps (in her room, before they start any sort of relationship) without her knowledge in Twilight is "romantic", it will always be creepy to me.

Your inability to accept that different people have different beliefs about private amusements is rather pitiful. I don't share these fantasies but I see nothing wrong in other people doing so.

You accept these "amusements" without discernment, passively, irresponsibly. I caution these people with the same concern I would caution someone with the impulse to gamble. It can be detrimental, and the search for a thrill like that could be masking the absence of something more substantial and rewarding in their lives. I would hope that they do some self-examination as to why they have these fantasies. Perhaps they were sexually abused as children and have been confused between this abuse and actual affection. If so, they owe it to themselves, not to me, to confront that issue, sort out the difference between victim and prize, and decide if a desire for further sensation of risk or abuse is truly in their own best interest. Vice, vicious and victim are variants of the same word, meaning corruption. It's that "deadness within us" that Justin refers to.

Vice, vicious and victim are variants of the same word, meaning corruption. as in decay, which, in turn, is where decadence comes from (incidentally, voluptuous doesn't come from "fullness, volume", but from voluto "to roll"- as in "to roll about in or to wallow in"-though it means "sensually pleasurable", it has nothing to do with satisfaction). It's that "deadness within us" that Justin refers to.

I do not think that discernment is an issue. Unless you are using it in the biblical sense, and that usage is something that really should be avoided.

Accepting these amusements passively is not being irresponsible. It is simply minding your own business and not interfering in the private lives of strangers.

And sometimes a fantasy is just that and nothing more. Given the amount of antisocial behavior shown in all forms of entertainment you must have very limited access if you can't accept the idea of the difference between fiction and real life.

I don't feel it is my place to judge others on their choice of entertainment, not really yours either.

Well, my take on what you are saying, is that everyone who likes this show are dead inside.

So the zombie apocalypse has cometh, the dead are walking. And we never knew.

Seriously though, this is just a show, it has no power over me. It not some piece of cursed magic. We are not going to be contaminated. I have seen worse stuff on the internet, and by far I have read a lot worse stuff in paper books.

Our innate and learned sense of good and evil, which is what we really our talking about, was learned or not, a long time ago when we were kids.

Reading books, listening to music, playing games, watching TV and movies, and lastly watching anime will not make us dead inside. It is so funny that we make such a big deal about shows like this, when our own literature and movies are full of it. The type of material that people are complaining about makes the New York Times best selling list.

If we are all dead inside as has been implied, well, we are also millions strong. So you are not alone.

Cross Ange's rape was the final straw for me. I wasn't going to watch more, anyway, but the sexual abuse was so bad that they had to address it verbally in the episode preview. Still didn't help matters. Yech.

I didn't get far enough into Valvrave to see that infamous scene, but I heard about it, and it didn't sound like I would understand its place in the show. I was watching Majestic Prince over Valvrave, and that has 0 rapes. I think I made a good decision.
