G$ has no right to call anything sucky. They are the lowest-rated cable channel for a pretty good reason.
And I am really glad that I decided not to watch the interview. Didn't even watch the streamed video beyond thirty seconds. X-Play (and its previous incarnation Extended Play) had anime segments before and they were great, and informative. This one for AotS was just annoying overall.

Mink from Dragon Half. It was actually a fairly well-made costume, enough so that if I say her walking around at a con, I would definitely ask for a picture. HOWEVER, on a show where she is supposed to be claiming that most anime fans are relatively normal people, that particular costume was not a good choice. I get the sense they asked her to at least cosplay, though, and they really didn't give her any chance to speak or defend her fandom at all. Her purpose was really, "Look at what freaks those anime fans are lolololol"

What I'd give to have G4 shut down for good.

Why do people insert the "$" somewhere in the name of any company they don't like (like 4Kid$, for a more commonly used example)? Isn't the point of every business to make money?

I found Pereira to be quite reasonable as a host. He didn't seem to shift to any side or be a sterotypical jerk like Gibson. Mays did an execellent job, I hope he made Gibson cry after the show! I think the cosplayer was purposely picked to go against anime, as she was pretty clueless, but that's only fair because Mays helped anime's cause quite well.
IMO though, it's one of the reasons that because of idiots like Gibson, that anime is still a niche medium. These are the type of people that watch 2 episodes of Dragonball Z, hate it, and then automatically assume all other anime sucks just like it. Can't be avoided I guess.
Edit:

He might've actually just been holding in shift for an extra letter, as 4 is on the same button as $. Hmm...

There's just a lot of very unreasonable single-minded people on the intraweb and it doesn't help when they're extra bias. Anime fan are very passonate people, get they tend to get offended by the slightest thing. I was shock at how many people have "death wish" toward Al Kahn, just because he's associated with 4kids. It's one to dislike someone, it's another thing to be ignorant and wish for death, harm or suffering to others, especially over an anime.

Re: Cosplay Girl
AIGH
Re: Everything Else
As someone who's been on AotS with Kevin Pereira ... yeah, the scriptwriting is clearly biased against anime in general (look at the loaded question, a more neutral POV would've been "Anime: Good or Bad?") and I think Jonathan did as well as he could've managed.
Kinda wish Zac had been there, that would've been a really amusing scenario. Can't blame him though, because it's kinda like walking directly and intentionally into an ambush that you know is there.
I almost can't blame G4 for hating anime, though ... because anime-based video games have a suck rate higher than Sturgeon's Constant (>90%).

Define normal....
wats abnormal about being passionate about the things you love? and how did they pick her the interview??? if ya want to know something about a "superfan", u ask a "superfan"! |
This has to be the most meaningful post here. I agree 100% with Otaku QT. Her first sentence explains this whole trivia or whatever ya wanna call it, about anime. We're just passionate about it. People are passionate about their jobs, games, rankings on various things, being #1, doing your best, sports, cars, etc. But, when it's something like Anime, the person has to be abnormal or nerdy or something. G4 is a channel focusing mainly video games and until years back games were disriminated the same as Anime, as being nerdy.

What I find real weird is the person cosplaying I saw at Ikasucon last weekend. It was a so-so interview. Mays you did a good job. Thank you for standing up for us anime fans.

Who is Jon Gibson anyway? Is he even associated with anime? Doesn't seem like he knows too much.

I hate how the interviewer made it seem like only anime people cosplay. I'd say 1/4 of cosplayers at any given con are dressed from a video game. I think cosplay is bigger with anime than with comic and game fans because there are more girl fanatics. At cons (the ones I go to, anyway) it's about 50/50 - at a comic convention I went to, it was about 20/80 (if that much).
The interviewer is a dick. I dislike that show in general.
And what happened to their anime block, anyway? O.o

Still out for the count, and no one, not even the community's basic inside contact, Teggy (the editor for AU and Cinematech), knows/is allowed to say anything.

Placing the "$" in place of the "4" has become a meme on a message board I go to that was born from the pre-G4 AnimeUnleashed community (for those that went there, I'm talking kirschy, Squeakachu, DFarthing, etc.) It was just something kirschy started doing to express his simple dislike for the site and admin policy. I normally just do it out of habit.
In this case, however, it was indeed a case of holding the shift down too long.

It's lazy, small-minded "criticism" from armchair internet media critics.
Generally if someone does that ("micro$oft" "di$ney") it's your cue to dismiss whatever else they're saying out of hand. It's kind of a handy little signifier, actually.

I am not really sure I see what all the fuss is about. I mean if you look at the time allotted to each guest I would say, Mr. Mays received more time than Jon Gibson or Heather Dugger. Also I did not really find him all that offensive except the comment about Japanese people concerning math and science. He was just showing his immaturity, and he barely had any time in the interview(probably a good thing for fandom).
Now as to the real problem imo the girl Heather seemed unprepared. Her answers were rather week, but that could just be attributed to being nervous. I think Mr Mays did an excellent job at dispelling some of the myths associated with the anime fandom Great Job Mr.Mays
for spelling

5 Stars Mays. And I like your calmness even when Jon tried to take a wild shot at you with the math question.
