Well, i for one really enjoyed the episodic-comedy-slice-of-life aspect of Inu x Boku while the last couple of episodes ventured too far into shoujo territory for my tastes.

It's certainly no masterpiece but flushable seems to be a bit too harsh in my opinion.

I can't really disagree with the review of Inu x Boku...I don't even know how I managed to watch the whole thing. That oreo analogy was spot on. However, despite my agreement up through episode 9, I will say that I was actually really impressed by the ending (I think it was the last two episodes?) - enough so that it bumped my final opinion of the show up a full letter grade. I wouldn't recommend this show to many people, but since you've already made it through the first 9, it seems like a shame to drop it right when you get to the actual payoff - especially when all that remains is roughly one hour of showtime.

couldn't agree more on sekirei pure engagement, don't even know, why i bothered to watch it. granted though, i was a lot more productive during the episodes because i started tidying up and cleaning my room and researching ways to get a credit card etc.

didn't watch any of the other reviewed series and i don't think i will, seems like boring, run-of-the-mill stuff.
BUT...."i wanna be your dog" was by the stooges, not iggy pop. granted, he was probably actively involved in writing it, so one might call it an iggy pop song....but who cares? it's so good!

I found Inu X Boku enjoyable, but I watched it as it came out. I really wouldn't be surprised if it's one of those that just doesn't work in marathon mode, given the amount of fluff the series has.

It could be the next Gia's List! Top Eight Freakiest Anime Nipples. Wink

The freakiest is the absence of nipples. I still can't get used to seeing shirtless guys in anime without nipples. I don't get it, you see shirtless guys all the time, why no nipples in anime?

EDIT: And speaking of big breasts, I'm still waiting for the touch of realism that would come from the natural consequences of lots of females with ginormous balloon boobs in scantily clad outfits swinging around large sharp objects. I mean if you can lop off a head or arm, I see no reason one of the ladies can't loose a balloon boob. I would pay to see the horrified expression on the face of otaku as one of their waifu was desecrated in such a way. Twisted Evil

Amen, brother. This whole "men don't got no nipples" thing has got to stop.

Also, I'm tired of not seeing any hairy-chested men in my anime. As a hairy man, I feel underrepresented.

There are some pics, but I have no plans to post them publicly.

The extras on the Ghost In The Shell: Stand Alone Complex DVDs included interviews with several of the people who made the anime. One thing that's stuck with me is how someone commented that for one episode that focused on Togusa's wife, they asked the only guy on the team who was married to direct it, because he was the only one with experience with a woman's life. Seriously. There were apparently no women on the creative team, and only one of the men was in a long-term relationship with a woman.

This story made me cringe... but I think there are several layers here. One layer is that the marriage rate is low in Japan, but in general, I think young unmarried men tend to be over-represented on artistic and/or videogame jobs. (Particularly in Japan where women's job prospects post-college are not so great.) Speaking from experience, young men are free to take low-paying jobs with long hours that are freelance and offer no benefits, precisely because they don't have kids or wives to return home to at the end of the night. Married men might seek out higher-paying, steadier jobs, (if those jobs exist). It seems like after I read this open letter to James Cameron thing I'd read about VFX people who had to quit when they had families, but now I can't find my source, except for this commenter.

Computer programming magic has also been used in Negima and Haruhi Suzumiya and it fits the basic tenant of Fantasy Magic, that is, outsiders have no idea how it works. "How does my computer do the things it does?" "It's magic. Now pay me for getting it running again." The Modern Shaman in action, no doubt.

In those instances, computer magic wasn't as large a part of the show as it is with Modern Magic, where it's part of the premise. At least one character in Haruhi has almost-magic computer powers, but I like that explanation better...

It's the use of any explanation that bothers the reviewer, correct?

No, that's not the case. It's more of the fan pandering that bothers me. I suspect Modern Magic is intended for an audience of IT professionals, or at lease computer savvy people. It it was meant to stroke my ego, it would be about anime reviewers who cast "spells" by writing reviews.

If you had the freedom that comes with animation, why would you limit yourself to plausible boobs? Can you imagine if the creators of Total Recall said "Say, we're setting this movie where there are a bunch of mutants... but I think we'll limit the number of boobs per person to two"?

Because the point of characters with large boobs tends to be "be attractive", and part of the reason anime girls tend to be attractive is that they exhibit many of the characteristics of sexually attractive women without as many of the flaws (of course, I'd never spurn a real woman for a "waifu", but that's another show). Going TOO implausible kinda destroys this purpose unless you're trying to appeal to out-there fetishes.

I can see where you're coming from, and I'm OK with exaggerating the female form for cartoons, that's part of the fun, right? But I think the problem is if you include a six-breasted (or heck, eight-breasted) girl in a sci-fi show, you might turn on some viewers who are into that, but then totally disgust other viewers. If the multi-breasted lady is in lots and lots of scenes, the show will be un-viewable for perhaps more audience members than would like it.

Knowing the characters were designed by a lady added another weird level to my viewing experience.

it's not just yaoi. Though not a majority, it's common enough to find female mangaka in male-oriented titles

Both true, however...

You're correct to associate the bizarre nipple shapes with hentai, as Sakurako Gokurakuin - the manga's creator - did indeed do a handful of pornographic or borderline pornographic works. This "torpedo tits" style is also evident in High School of The Dead, whose artist has his name (so to speak) on a few adult titles too.

Indeed it's true that female creators can produce just as perverted, bizarre, exciting, bloody or low-brow works as their male counterparts. This is a phenomenon that's continued to this day to perplex me, but that's a subject for another day, I think. Three high profile mangaka whose work would not perhaps be automatically labeled "penned by a girl" would be Fullmetal Alchemist, D.Gray-Man, and Nymphet/Kodomo no Jikan.

My God do we ever talk about breasts a lot around here. We need Buichi Terasawa to animate something just for the sake of variety in conversation.

That would be Gia's best list yet! I'm surprised you thought of that. It had not even crossed my mind Shocked I sense great potential in your inner deviant comrade Twisted Evil And no need to deprive highschoolers of this unique educational opportunity! (especially when the horny bastards can already buy the original materials themselves)

I prefer to think of myself as just being open-minded, adventurously creative and possibly on the Imagination Land sex-offender registry.

oh hey XD my shelves got featured this week. neat. ((hope you like them everyone >///<))

I wasn't sure if I should have bought "Modern Magic Made Simple", but I was never a big fan of science mixing with fantasy magic either, so I guess I'll skip that one. So thank you!

I loved Inu X Boku SS, but it took too long to get to the answers. But even so, it was a fluffy and enjoyable show with - surprisingly - some real depth to it.
