The first story arc with Shin is full of horrendous, ridiculous filler that slows the story down. And unfortunately most people give up there. I actually think the animation became very good for 1980's TV animation around the middle of the show. |
I can attest to that. The plot starts to get more interesting once Rei makes his appearance in the Fang Clan arc. I've currently watched up to episode 38 at this point and I can tell you that things are truly starting to heat up at this point!

I don't think it's expired, I think CPM probably owns it outright (since they co-produced the Director's Cut and the sequel). It's just out of print. I don't think any DVD could be released much cheaper than the $5 you can currently find it for online. |
I keep forgetting CPM co-produced it. Still, they should put it back in print (Both on DVD and Blu-Ray), along with iTunes downloads.
That reminds me: Is CPM dead, or just hibernating? We haven't seen a new license from them in fecking ages! |
I think they're still technically hibernating, but like you said it's been half of forever since they've done anything, so considering them done probably isn't much of a stretch. |
Well, they need to get back up and get some more anime. I hear there's a whole bunch of Geneon shows that haven't yet been rescued. If FUNimation doesn't get them, someone else will. **wakey wakey CPM**

Apparently, I didn't miss much. |
I knew this would go under Garbage, it is pretty much. I wasted that whole hour watching this crap. It was god awful. To be honest, I saw this as one of the preview anime shown on a VHS a friend loaned me years ago. I thought it would have been better.

Many others heroes were a bunch of self-righteous pricks that kissed puppies and only ate vegetables; this Geist would probably eat puppies, or probably have if they were around then. It just felt different.
Of course, I still enjoy characters like Kain from Blood Omen. |
I just shed tears of joy, seeing a reference to Blood Omen.
You, sir, just made my week.
There are few protagonists as anti-heroic as Kain, lord of the ends justifying the means.
But I (ecstatically) digress.

I'm surprised no one has responded to this yet.
I hate the manga with a passion but the character you seek is easily Guts from Berserk; Guts is hard to top in terms of GAR unless you go back to shows like the ones mentioned in this thread.
I'd like to take this opportunity to pointlessly observe that the R1 Shin Hokuto no Ken DVDs were beautifully, beautifully done.

It's just too bad that the Complete collection DVD has all the extras cut out.

Check www.manga.com. The Director's Cut & Death Force are in their catalog. However, I don't know if they have it available for sale. This is from the PR announcing Ani-Monday's 2nd Season:
Quote: | Much of the programming for the Ani-Monday block is coming via Manga's new partnerships and distribution agreements with Bandai Entertainment, Inc. and Central Park Media Corporation. |

Thanks for the review, Justin. I never thought the people at CPM felt more pain over this title than we did.
BTW, I just want to know, what really caught the attention of CPM enough to license M.D. Geist, as I think it flopped big-time in Japan?

That would be good, considering that Geneon only managed to release about 3/4 of the 2nd Lupin the 3rd series. The nostalgia value of this may be beneficial for them...unless Funimation gets it first, as they released some of the most recent movies/specials of that franchise.
Also, I would like for them to license that '90s Ninja Gaiden OVA. Since the revival of the game series selled well, it might attract fans of the game and veterans as well!
Oh, and it wouldn't hurt if they also licensed that weird Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles OVA from the mid-90s as well, if only for the nostalgia (and kitsch ) value it has.

Probable bacause it would be a perfect fit for the Testosterone Filled, Logic be damned Action Movie scene of the 80's in the US, it's not like the 80's OVA scene wasn't filled with loads of this type of entertainment, the OVA was designed to break the shackes of network tv, toy companies and the censors...

That, or as Justin alluded to in the article, John O'Donnell being the MD Geist fan. I think there are several early-industry fans-turned-pro who used their leverage to get some of their favorite titles licensed. I believe it was a similar scenario that CPM wanted Yamato (or something else having to do with Nishizaki Yoshinobu) and they would up with Odin: Photon Space Sailer Starlight.
EDIT: The above is to be taken as speculation due to my poor memory; I need to verify where I heard the story about Odin.

And that why it is so much fun, its unapologetic, balls to the walls action, Geist its the ultimate personification of nihilism, he was created as an ultimate weapon and then got shoved to a satellite by his own people... you would be mightily pissed off too and with a sincere wish of exterminating them all in the most nasty ways possible!!!!
In this world filled with namby pamby characters, M.D. Geist stands as a beacon of the what the ova could bring to the table unshacked by censorship, a product of its age

And the fact that he's a badass, it even adds up to the coolness of MD Geist.
