As I've said before I went into this show not knowing anything about it except that it's tied in with the Blood series itself. But seriously, I have to ask the people who could not see this coming, I mean really did you not think there was something slightly suspicious with how Fumito offered Tadayoshi something else? For those claiming they screwed you all over with the ending, why were you not paying attention, you could clearly see that this was a bit of an act. I mean this isn't Deus Ex Machina type stuff, the clues are all there if you look hard enough. |
I think it's safe to assume that we all knew something was up, since, yes, the clues are laid out all over the place-- the coffee, the guimauve, the flashbacks. But even though I figured something was afoot with Saya herself, I certainly did not expect the dead to come back and say, SURPRISE! We're not dead at all! We're actors! TADAH!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! WE'RE NOT EVEN FRIENDS! LOL!.

Had this show been more in line with the designs of Blood Plus or perhaps similar to Death Note, I could live with it, but the fact it uses the CLAMP designs just makes me wonder how far are they willing to sell out to have female characters they design just become cannon fodder (just look at Code Geass). |
Not exactly a good comparison, in all honesty, since in this case CLAMP happens to be directly responsible for the actual story and, one way or another, the resulting level of graphic violence is at least an entire order of magnitude higher here. It's almost like night and day. Whatever else you want to say about the show, the unavoidable fact is that CLAMP had plenty of creative input in Blood-C.

I like the shelves this week, woo for Animazement.
I liked [C], though it's been a while since I watched it so it's hard to put into words. I like that people invested in Kimimaro, it makes sense to me in that setting. Kimimaro is a small business and the only way he could expand/grow is for others to invest in him and allow him to reach further then he would be able to on his own.

I don't know if the movie shows how they escaped certain death, honestly I completely missed the guimauve and coffee, I knew Fumito probably had done something to her but I was thinking it was because of something that happened previously to the series, the coffee never occurred to me until I think he showed up right near her bedside, the guimauve was really genius because at first I thought it was just part of the act, then when he revealed what it really was I was pretty disgusted. I think what I really loved about the ending is that the curtains just came down around the whole charade and people felt exactly like Saya did at that exact moment every thing was revealed to her Anyway the ending of it really does set up the movie. I'm interested to see how it turns out but a few of the voice actors have described the movie to me as "insane."

Great article. Love it.
Great collection, Chad. I'm a sucker for shelf porn and I love the wood panel walls.

You're probably right in that regard. Its still something that has me scratching my head at their decision making. Its more personal confusion than anything else.

I found that the purpose of a show like Blood-C makes a whole lot more sense if you study the writer behind it, Ohkawa-sensei. I'm a huge fan of CLAMP and I understand why lots of people don't enjoy their storytelling as much, but to me, it's the kind of storytelling and presentation I enjoy the most. I need more time to elaborate on this, but I don't have that right now, so I'll just say that I enjoyed Blood-C for reasons OTHER than the gore and plot twist (I thought the gore was far too much and I still felt a lot more attached to this plot twist than I was to the ending of "Another," which I didn't really think was that interesting).
It can't necessarily be appreciated as a "horror" series, nor is it an "action" series or a series directly about the characters, but just looking at the concept, plot, and storytelling, it is certainly a CLAMP series, and that feeling was a very positive one for me. Now, all I have to do is see the movie and try to figure out where CLAMP was going with all this.

Bairn is Scottish for "child" so Saya is hunting for "elder children" I really dislike alternate retellings of an original story, but Blood never really had an "original story" before ",The Last Vampire" movie so the whole franchise is a convoluted mash up of different ideas of that. There was a Manga written by someone else that tried to sequel the original movie, but it was really terrible, artistically and plot wise. A right dog's breakfast.

Sorry, jeez. I figured that since you'd been given an inaccurate idea of the characters' ages, the only thing that causes that misconception was to blame. So your complaint is that no one in the cast is college age or at least 16+, then? |
I said clearly in my first post it was not just the ages but also the in your face nature of the constant crotch shots. I'm not going to bother to copy or reiterate what I said there again. It's there already.

Chad: Loved the shelves, you have a lot of what I have. I am jealous of your Kodocha Anime releases of Kodomo no Omocha! I still have some of the old Kodocha releases myself, including Macross 7. I still have a great VCR as well.
Great collection Chad, I loved looking at it! I also have a 10 year old son myself, and I have been slowly introducing him to anime as well. He was loving Ranma until I started getting alarmed about some of the lower humor in it. Slayers might be a great one to try with him, anything else you might recommend?
On Blood C - I didn't hate it as much as everyone else, apparently. The only part of the ending that ticked me off is that I have to wait on a movie. I kinda enjoyed the reveal that all the friends were actually nasty people.
I you want a nice Clamp product, check out Kobato, I suppose, it's available cheaply (unlike Card Captor Sakura, which is out of print).

I've seen all of Blood+, the Blood Movies (Anime & Live Action) and recently Blood C.
My thoughts of Blood C, yeah it started off weird and the ending was 'a "WTF BBQ!?!?" - kinda moment', I'll still buy Blood C, despite some peoples' distasteful opinions of the show.
Because once Blood C the movie comes out, I think this will make a worthy set to actually keep. From the trailers I've seen of the movie, this will definitely be more true to the Saya that we all know.

sums up nicely the big problem with animes (imho obviously).

Good question. For me the ending (the "mixer" etc.) was not shocking but just ridiculous ... I guess, sometimes less is more.

I loved the creativity in [C] The Power of Money and Control. The design of the Financial Districts and how different districts correspond to world nations, separate yet interconnected. I liked the idea of that the Assets appearance represented something important in the players' lives, but We never found out what Mushu was supposed to be, which drove me nuts! Who was she? Kimimaro's sister? Future spouse? Daughter?
I never took economics, and I actually tried to learn a thing or two from the show. No dice there. The director had said he wanted it to be educational, and some reviewers pointed out various economic terms and concepts that were scattered throughout the show, but it doesn't come together in a way that would teach anyone more than a Freakonomics! podcast episode. I was invested in the characters and engaged in the fights and absolutely devastated when Kimimaro's professor ceased to exist. I'd give the show a B+. It's Rental Shelf, but it's high on the queue!
Does the BD have any extras besides a dub?
On C- Gotta say, I'm very disappointed with what Saya was allowed to turn into. Bamboo and Colony Drop's reviews are brutal. CLAMP, keep your experiments with your own original lanky characters, please.

@Psycho 101: Sorry, the age of the characters was a lot of the complaint, from what I was got and just reread (probably the "[have the characters be X age (which incidentally most are)] and I'm all in" part). I was just mentioning that most of the cast indeed does fit into your "acceptable" age bracket. I probably didn't do so clearly enough. The complaint that Strike Witches is full of "little girls" is actually a common one, due largely to the character designs.
