Let's keep it civil please. Some of you are treading into personal insult territory which we don't allow here. So let's please remain civil and just debate opinions and views and leave out any sort of insults. Thanks.

If the Japanese are killing themselves at 1700 hours, how are the Koreans surviving at 2100? Does it count lunch breaks used for power naps?

Some people have previously mentioned that it's common in Japan for people to work extra unpaid hours under the table to not look bad to their co-workers and their bosses. It may be that.

Yes, I don't think that data is accurate because I don't believe those reporting their hours were being honest. As leafy sea dragon said, I think a lot of people in Japan work unreported hours, and probably quite a few of them. In the US, we're pretty determined to get paid for the work we do, so we make sure our hours are accurately counted. As I understand it, most American employees leave soon after their shifts end, but many Japanese stay around so as to not leave before their boss leaves. I have heard this from so many different sources that I'm pretty firmly convinced of its accuracy.

It appears Japan's Government aren't too happy about the negative publicity and are showing that they are doing something about it.
