Hayate is indeed hilarious. Colorful, fast-paced, and totally funny even when you can see the punch coming a mile away... at least when it's following the manga; later in the series several non-manga-inspired episodes show up which generally are not that good, but the mixture of anime references, slapstick humor, fourth-wall breaking, random insanity, and typical romantic comedy misunderstandings never goes away and rarely gets tiresome.
Hayate is hilarious even if you don't get its referential humor, but if you do it's even better. Waiting for a box set, though; singles are too expensive and I'm already buying the manga.
