This is kinda what I was thinking. I guess in Goro's case "beginner's luck" is getting a second chance after doing poorly in your debut and your father was resistant to you becoming a director in the first place. I'll be surprised if they're ready to take his training wheels off yet. Emerje |

Well, after Earthsea, it's not like he can get much worse, so that's a start. I'm going to take a risk and start looking forward to this one.

A critical disaster, arguably, although a few reviewers dissented, e.g. Britain's Mark Kermode http://www.guardian.co.uk/film/2008/jan/27/dvdreviews.features But it was NOT a commercial disaster. According to Boxoffice Mojo, it earned $68 million worldwide. Okay, so Miyazaki's contemporary films can earn triple that, but it's still huge in anime terms. |

There's a feeling that Goro was sort of handed a director's job without toiling many years as a grunt like Hayao and Isao Takahata did. So everyone is going to look at his stuff skeptically, fairly or unfairly.

Satoshi Takebe.
Ghibli. Shojo. Do want very much yes. The very mention of Romeo X Juliet would have probably made me put it in the top ten spots on my watchlist. Everything else is just bonus points. |
