While I can't agree with or condone the content he was viewing, by no means do lewd drawings justify sending someone to jail.

The real moral of the story here, do a better job at hiding your porn from your wife! Laughing

But on a serious note, if the guy was already married and he was looking at stuff like that...I can see why his wife would be mad. But they could have easily talked things out as opposed to having her husband arrested. But then again if he had the real deal on top of drawings, then I guess she was justified in calling the cops. If not, poor sod.

Personally, I think that owning Lolicon & Shotacon mangas are less of a danger than owning 30-round semi-automatic assault rifles.

Folks, don't complain here unless you're prepared to do something about it.

I'm not condoning or suggesting anything here, but dudes, it's best to keep your porn to yourselves

On a different note, there are serious problems with how we view crime in this one nation under God. If a crime does not have a victim, how can we consider it a crime? We use prison as a tool of punishment, by restricting the rights of those who have violated the rights of others. What justification do we, as a people, have to strip a man his rights away who has not violated the rights of others? We can say 'he is dangerous, he must be locked away to prevent a future tragedy,' but are not all men innocent until proven guilty? How can we justify imprisoning a man for what he might do, for are not all men capable of evil?

Though I don't agree with him for having it on files (that was just stupid), and I'm sure his wife thought she was doing him a favour by trying to save him from himself, which he will surely thank her for the rest of his life, I fully agree with your statement. It's this kind on cultural conundrum that makes America great. Laughing

That's what happens when you let raw emotion supplant sound thinking and utilitarian calculation dislodge ethical reasoning.

After all, surely all those shouting "Think of the children!" derive more satisfaction from this conviction than the he suffers.

The real stupidity is society's definition of a 'minor' so that it might include adolescents close to my age, not the idea of obscenity laws which make exceptions for artistic value. Has anyone ever seen a porno with a real plot? Thought not. Laughing Whereas something such as Bible Black or La Blue Girl actually has a plot, independent of its sexualised content, its quite a reasonable distinction really. It's also why live action filems such as Milk Money and That's My Boy! are not considered as child pornography, and context is likewise why Bambi isn't considered as endorsing animal abuse lol.

Though at the same time its stupid that people be imprisoned simply for owning drawings IMO, but at least you can see why people object to certain forms of shotacon/lolicon featuring prepubescent children being abused by adults.

We don't know what kind of 'obscenity' he possessed, it could be really nasty stuff, or stuff no one sane could object to.

I would rather say the exact opposite is true, most people would only feel raw emotion about drawings if the content was seriously nasty, whereas the whole of modern sexual censorship is related to abstractions such as 'power imbalances' and the warping of the concept of 'consent' so that it can mean whatever people like instead of as a useful measure of suffering inflicted.

I decided to join the CBLDF after hearing about the arrest of that American Otaku in Canada.
A month after I joined, the CBLDF succeeded in rescuing him from jail.
From that moment on, I made an oath to myself to make sure that something like this will never happen again.
I've already renewed my CBLDF membership last night after hearing the news about this.

Here's the person responsible for passing this anti-Lolicon law into action.

This story specifically mentions manga at the end, but do we know if the obscene comics they nabbed this guy for were manga related at all? The ANN story says the names of the comics haven't been released.

Also couldn't help but noticing Christopher Handley's sentence was handed down on Feb 11, 2010. February seems to be a popular month for sending dirty book reading criminals up the river.

Is this a new form of the anti-Japanese sentiment in America?
Just find innocent fans of Lolicon/Shotacon and have them locked-up from the American public & their children?
The United States government has no respect for the Japanese & Otaku cultures.
So why should Otakus have to respect THEIR culture?

And keep your women far away from your computer!

Seriously though, why would you marry someone who would get you arrested? It's almost as though she did it just to get something out of him, like custody of their children or an excuse to get a divorce.

You would think that "not get me arrested" would be a priority in traits of a woman you'd marry.
