I'll give you $5.00 US!
Seriously, though, I understood that the whole thing stemmed from spoiler[Tsukiko Sagi's grief over letting her puppy die], but how did that become spoiler[the physical manifestation that eventually destroyed Tokyo?] And what is up with Maniwa? Am I to assume that he spoiler[took the place of the old man and will now "guide" another warrior to defeat the next grief manifestation that attacks the city?] And how long does the apparent cycle last? The ending definitely raised more questions than answers for me! |

Okay, ancient spoiler tags come forth!
spoiler[ Why the physical manifestation? Well, that's the thing, everyone at first needed it to be real right? Then later, people corroborated the incidents *episode 5* and made it "reality" People slowly began depending on the thing, but then when it got out of control *People getting agitated by losing their MAROMI dolls... which was all eventually returned to the M & F building... by the old lady probably* Everyone was actually going around kicking some ass (or driving trucks into buildings, whichever) and getting all pissed, but then when we see it, we see a giant manifestation of LIL' SLUGGER *more on that in the next answer* Why did MANIWA get owned? He actually turned into "RADAR MAN" He started to lose touch of all reality around him and got delusional *which is too bad, he started out as a normal guy* And with him and the rest of TOKYO, we, the viewer, got dragged along for the ride *hence seeing some weird stuff* We turned into RADAR MAN *like what KON says in the commentary* ... the problem with MANIWA I guess is that he wasn't able to get back in touch with REALITY and he turned into that old paranoid guy because he looked into things too much and drew too many weird conclusions *1 = ICHI, Tsukiko's room nymber, etc.* Not everything is a connection, it could be a COINCIDENCE *Think Tokyo Godfathers* Anyway, we don't see the ending as is mainly since it wouldn't be cool enough... no really ] That's pretty loose, but I'm confident with my answers... gotta watch sometime soon again though |

Same here. I am also kind of confused about the whole ending.
However, I've only followed and watched the whole Series on TV (Adult Swim) and I am pretty sure that they've cut out some parts of it. Because at the very end, Maniwa was supposed to have a "little" speech about the whole thing. You can listen to it here: http://www.dubawards.com/To%20Begin.mp3 I hate when they do that; but I guess they want that we by the DVDs in order for us to see the uncut version. |

The end thing actually just tells you to go back and rewatch the series since you might have missed something...
well, that and the surprised... but really, that's it |

see no one's getting this spoiler[it didn't happen beacuse of Maromi, that's just how Shounen Bat(Lil Slugger) was Born. remember in episode 6 the homeless woman said she saw Tsukiko hit herself. in other words Tsukiko told the same lie again that she told years ago, so people would sorry for her. but since she's a famous figure now, rumors spread through society, hence giving Shounen Bat(Lil Slugger) and actual persona.] |

The way I saw it Tsukiko's lie gave the situation a name. After all Lil Slugger is spoiler[a dellusion] so after he made headlines he became known. So those in future episodes when they get 'backed into a corner' they spoiler[believe that they see Lil Slugger cause that's what was fed to them. And their strong paranoia manifested itself physically.] Mind over matter basically. I still don't understand the last scene. My guess was that it explained Lil Slugger's existence mathematically but I'm probably way off on that.

spoiler[no it just means it's means it's a big circle that keeps repeating, it doesn't even necessarily have to be Shounen Bat(Lil Slugger) next time.] the final part kinda explains this somewhat, but adult swim cut it for time |

I thought the episode was fairly self-explainatory and series far less complicated than other anime in the "WTF" genre.

The thing with MANIWA was most likely suppose to shock people *which it probably did*
Abbrubt, but effective |

So, you are saying that the people who apparently spoiler[died in the later Lil Slugger attacks (from Fox onward) essentially scared themselves to death?] |

Like I said it was a mind over matter thing. If you truly believe what you see then you probably feel the effects of it. Everyone went crazy with paranoia and they all went a little insane which obviously changed thier state of mind. As far as they know Lil Slugger came and smacked them upside their head but I think it was all in their head. I was thinking about it last night and throughout the whole show you don't see Lil Slugger actually hit anybody. Yeah you see the incident from a first person perspective but you don't see it from a third party's point of view (i.e. the bat actually connecting to the head and as far as the 6th sense-esque ep. I still say it was Fox). I think that's supported by the old woman when spoiler[she says she saw Tuskiko give herself the injuries.] Lil Slugger grew because (just being safe) spoiler[everyone believed in his existence.] But that's how I saw it.
As far as the last bit, v1cious pointed out that spoiler[it meant that it was a big circle. You see the last scene at the begining, and although I saw Tsukiko's new character as a turn around for her it is also in a way a new Maromi. As far as who the old man is, my friend thinks that it was Maniwa. There's a condition where your hair can turn white after a traumatizing event. He told me M Night talks about it in the 6th Sense commentary and points out that Haley Joel Osment begins to get a patch of white hair near the end of the movie. So basically, assuming the old man is Maniwa he tools that big equation out and when he reaches the equal part he realizes that similar events will start to occur.] |

One word: Hatomura ... wait, why are we still using the spoiler tags? Anyway, remember when he got all stressed and lashed out at TSUKIKO? That kinda explains the thing *I mean, what happened afterwards* As for MANIWA... he wan't the old guy, but more of he TURNED into the old guy... Damn, that scene was so cool |

It wasn't until the second to last episode that we learn who the Paranoia Agent is. Now the old guy fom the beginning was a previous paranoia agent, an unenviable job for sure as apparently the one saddled with the responsibility ends up crazy. Nevertheless, it seems clear that the point of the equation is that the whole sequence of events is bound to repeat itself again, not with Lil' Slugger but with soem new specter.

You know when they said it was two years later, what was up with them only showing like 4 of the characters? Were they more "special" than the others in a way or something? Or did they just decide not to show all the characters?
