Now I am new here so if this has already been brought up I am very sorry. To me Geneon sells there DVD's for a very evil price.
Samurai Champloo for example sells for 23.99 per DVD. Hellsing, Gungrave, and many others are very expensive as well. Is this because the anime is so good and they know they can make a huge profit. Or do these prices seem reasonable to the masses.

In my opinion, Geneon has some of the better overall productions. A majority of their titles have enjoyable content, the dubbing is usually on the acceptable side, and a lot of the artwork they use for the cases are nice to look at.

I will say they are a bit lacking in extras and maybe episode count per disc, but all in all, they're still my favorite company.

To solve their pricing woes, I always buy their DVDs online. I don't think I've ever paid more than $22 (including shipping) for a single volume, and I've paid as low as $5 for some of their DVDs on eBay. Of course, it doesn't seem like Master Keaton is that popular anyway, but still...

I would put them at the top, Bandai at second, and probably Media Blasters at third (only because they have Kenshin Wink).

Oooh yeah I love Bandai's boxes because they come with so much extra stuff. Anyway, it all depends on where you're looking. I've never paid list price for anime, and I really don't intend to anytime soon. And it also depends on the individual title. Did you try looking in Overstock.com, deepdiscountdvd.com, and other online places? If it's still too expensive, I'm sure a brick will be released sometime.

I thought most dvd retail for about 30.00
Geneon is more stingy about their discount.

Actually I thought the same thing.
I picked up Gankutsuou: The Count of Monte Cristo chapter 1 last week at Best Buy, and I was a little shocked that it was selling for $24.99 instead of the usual $19.99.

Geneon is probably my favorite distributor, they just have those great titles (now, if only they could be Union Sad ) Bandai is great too, they have Planetes, one of my favorite series Smile

Hm.. well, out of the current 109 DVDs on my shelf, 12 of them are from ADV:

Azumanga Daioh Vol. 1 w/ box
Neon Genesis Evangelion Platinum Vol.1 w/ box
Peace Maker Kurogane Vol.1 w/ box
RahXephon Complete set (whole series and LE box that came with the movie, not the thinpack collection)
Rurouni Kenshin: Ishin Shishi no Requiem movie

It's not that I dislike some of those titles enough to not finish the collections, but a friend of mine has all of AzuDai and most of PMK, while I've already seen all of Eva beforehand.

As for where I'd put them on my list, of course you know they're near the bottom in terms of production (dub-wise). I used to hate their subtitles when they were big and skinny, along with some mistranslations too, but their new font is much better.

So I guess the only thing they have going for them is noterioty of famous titles. The only product of theirs I've given a Masterpiece rating to is Rurouni Kenshin: Tsuioku-hen. While it certainly is an artistic jewel, the way ADV handled it could've been better.

The subs are the kind I despised, big and skinny taking up about a quarter of the screen and not well translated here and there. And of course, the horrible "Samurai X" logos all over the menu and integrated into the opening and closing credits weren't fun to watch either.

FUNimation would probably be #4 because I'm really starting to like how they handle their newer products like Fullmetal Alchemist and Gunslinger Girl. I can actually say I like their dubbing, which certainly wasn't the case back when I was a major Dragonball Z fan. While it's true a few of those VAs are from ADV now, I feel the sound director at FUNi does a better job utilizing what talent they have available.

And with that, I would put ADV at #5 (out of a top 5 list). Not to say their titles are lacking, as they have a LOT, but their dubbing is the one and only thing that really keeps bugging me. Until that gets fixed or when I become senile enough to accept it, they'll be around the bottom for a while.

Yes, Geneon titles are a bite expensive. I was thinking about operation an anime store. As soon as I got the sale sheet, immediately got cold feet, due to the prices.

Now, you can catch Geneon DVDs for $20 at Suncoast within the first week of the release of that particular volume. I usually get Samurai Champloo from there. Wink

The only problem is that Suncoast does not put every new release on sale so the anime you might be looking for might retail for MSRP, Hajime No Ippo, but yeah Champloo and Gonkutsusou were on sale last I checked. Best Buy has Geneon DVDs around $5 under MSRP, but then again Mermaid Forest is $30. Geneon is the most expensive but they are my favorite as well.

I got Hellsing vol. 1 at Walmart for $7.50. Good price for a brand new shrinkwraped Geneon Title.

Virtually all anime DVDs (with the exceptions of boxsets) have a SRP of $29.99, however, with the exception of Suncoast, they do not sell at that price, usually between $17.99 and $23.99

I'm not sure what you mean. Samurai Champloo has an MSRP of $30, and I never see it in bulk stores for unde $25. So if you're saying that $24 is bad, then I really want to know where you get your anime.

Yeah, $24 doesn't seem bad for a new series that's still coming out disc by disc. It depends on the retailer, but most new stuff will be somewhere between $20-$25 per disc. Hellsing is being released in the signature series for cheaper prices, as is Trigun. I usually avoid buying disc by disc unless I really like the series--I'll either wait for the box set, or find something older and cheaper to buy instead. Buying single discs can really burn you, especially since Bandai has released Please Twins with all 4 discs, original box and soundtrack CD for $40, which is not much more than I paid for Vol. 1 + Box + CD Evil or Very Mad Twisted Evil Evil or Very Mad
