This book looks absolutely amazing. I just haven't had time to read it yet.

I haven't - I'm just a folklore junky.  Also, thanks, Northlander, for the additional information about Askeladd. It's always a struggle with myself as to how much academic info I should put in a review, so I'm glad you could add to it here.

That's because it was published in Weekly Shounen Magazine the first few month. It later moved to Afternoon, a monthly seinen magazine. |

I felt it was a justified behavioral change considering it happened after a certain major event. Though, I also believe it to be a temporary one at that. |

Although I didn't think the characterizations where quite as strong as they where in Planetes, Yukimura's previous manga, I absolutely loved Vinland Saga thus far. I can't wait to see where it goes from here.
Also, has anybody hear read the American comics series Northlanders? They're both similarly themed - realistic, well reasearched Viking stories. I've read the first few books of Northlanders, and although It feels more realistic than Vinland Saga (which is more fantastic), I've enjoyed Vinalnd Saga more. They're both good, though. |

I considered picking that (Northlanders) up as well but then I see that it has been cancelled at Volume or Issue #50? ...Don't know if I want to invest in an incomplete story. If that is in fact the case. |

Vinland Saga is still going strong. In fact next chapter (from Japan) is gonna be chapter 100. I highly recommend this series. Personally though while by no means do I find Book One to be dull I think plot seems rather straightforward although still great but Book Two is when I things start to get very interesting. How is Northlanders? |

Oops I totally misread that. I thought you said Vinland Saga was cancelled at issue 50 and not Northlanders.

I tried reading Northlanders. Some arc with main female character, liked it, but then she disappeared, and I stopped reading it.

Yeah I'm sure the art changed because they wanted to have a more 'mature style' because of the magazine change and not because it became monthly. Oh wait, no. I have no idea how anyone could say the first few chapters are 'generic shonen'. What 'generic shonen' looks like that? I'd love the writer or someone who agrees to list at least five that do. Monthly manga allows more detail but a good artist's drawings will be good regardless. Giving a truly great artist more time shouldn't make >that< much of a difference and it certainly shouldn't be the deciding factor of whether something is 'generic' or not. And it isn't in this case. |

I agree that the phrase "generic shounen" is sort of meaningless given the range of styles within that demographic, but I will say that the French general's character design (very cartoony) is completely out of place with the more realistic style that are used throughout all the alter chapters. It does seem that, after the first chapter, he decided that the series was too serious to have joke designs like that anymore. And that may be what the commenter was responding to. |

Yes, that's pretty much what I meant. Upon reflection, I should have phrased it as "basic conventions of shounen manga" and given that specific example, as well as a couple of others that stood out to me. (My sister has the book, or I'd expand on that.) |

Well, I think one should always add something, especially if there's a personal interest in that sort of thing with the reviewer. Doesn't have to be anything too extensive; readers can either take the references as is or do more research themselves if they want to know more. Anyway, I decided to give this one a go. I had heard about it earlier, but I wasn't sure what to think. I don't usually shirk from at least somewhat realistic portrayals of violence as long as it doesn't move into torture porn territory. While Shigurui was a great show, it was also thoroughly unpleasant to watch, so here's hoping Vinland Saga will be a little easier on the... uh... eyes. Besides, I'm curious about Askeladd now. Seeing as the original fairy tale had it as a (derogatory) nickname, I'm wondering if it's the same with Vinland Saga's Askeladd. And if that's the case, how did he get said name, and eventually what's his real one. |
