That's the problem with demographic labels as opposed to genre labels. Free! can in no way be considered shounen or seinen since it was unambiguously targeted towards females. (Yes, guys like myself can and did enjoy it but we were not the main audience.) And yet, Free! clearly followed the shounen sports formula. So calling it a shoujo show, whilst technically correct, feels really wrong, because it doesn't resemble most shoujo shows out there.
Tl;dr: Free! is a shoujo show, but calling it that is really stupid, even if technically correct. |
You do know there ARE shojo sports anime out there, right?

I don't know what it falls uner, but the way I always pitch it to others is as a 'slice of life, sports dramedy'. Covers all my bases then.
