There's a difference between changing the show and merchandising. Instead of trying to profit off the demographics the shows bring in, the execs are flat-out refusing to market to certain groups and demanding shows be changed to avoid attracting them. That is a huge problem that needs to be resolved.

That, I can agree with. DC's phobia of a female fanbase needs to be dealt with. It's leading them down a retrograde path.

See: why Ren & Stimpy Adult Party cartoon sucked so much compared to the Nickelodeon version

I never saw GGG OVAs, but since it's a mech show and those are reliant on toy sales, I wouldn't doubt that it didn't do as well as the kids version depending on how they handled it. Lord knows I bought way more merchandise for Gokaiger and Gobusters than Akibaranger. Laughing

Most companies know not to rock the boat too much. Kuroko is popular with girls, but rather than overhaul it to tailor it to fangirls, they keep it the same because they know the girls like it just the way it is now and any changes might piss them off or alienate viewers So they pump out merchandise and services that doesn't affect the show directly. Of course, it doesn't hurt Japan has a doujinshi industry so the fans can do it themselves at conventions by selling thousands of unofficial porn and support the community their own way and keep the fandom alive and kicking. The west has yet to establish that kind of market in any sizable scale.

Re DC: I dunno if that's why we haven't had a Wonder Woman movie yet. Seems like people want a Wonder Woman movie just because she's a woman and not because she's an interesting character. Her comic sells pretty bad and even stuff like Green Lantern sells more so its not like she's popular even in the comics. To me it seems like people only push Wonder Woman because of what she represents aka female heroes, rather than because they like her. Making stuff just because of that seems like a bad idea. Doesn't help DC movies tend to not do as well as Marvel. They have Batman and.. that's it. Superman Returns bombed, Man of Steel did okay, but a lot of people said it sucked.. Green Lantern bombed.. they can't even do male heroes right for the most part, so a female one probably won't do any better.

WW is a good character even with male readers (like Green Lantern, she's one of the few heroes who DOESN'T have an abundance of psychological baggage)--The reason she hasn't had a movie in this new superhero renaissance is....yep, you guessed it, good ol' neurotic Superfriends-phobic Warner.

Marvel had a distinct sense of their identity going into making their own movies, since so many of their heroes had good origin stories and solidly defined characters, but didn't have bad pop-culture associations to live down (like the Adam West Batman or the Superfriends versions of Green Lantern or Aquaman). They can go in, tell the Iron Man or Captain America origins straight, and they make for good comic-movie storytelling.
Warner doesn't think they can do that. They don't HAVE one uniform set of styles to tell their heroes, and feel they have to constantly "re-invent" the best-known icons, Batman and Superman, until they both go so far over the "reboot-stylized" cliff, they end up as Dark Knight Rises and Man of Steel, and then NOBODY wants the heroes anymore.
They think they've finally found a "uniform" style with Nolan/Snyder/Legendary Pictures (yeesh....gooood luck with that Rolling Eyes ), but up till now, everything's been a mixed bag--Heroes end up as exactly whatever occurs to the director or marketing heads that day, and if they hit on a bad idea and fail, like Lantern, well, that's showbiz.
Ditto that they couldn't find a "hook" for WW either, except to sell her as a "businesswoman" to chick-series audience, and that....didn't quite work out.

Warner/DC has one big obstacle to overcome in selling itself, and it's right there at the beginning of their name. Sad

That's the best news I've heard in a long time! First order of business should be to revive everything that jerk cancelled. I miss Young Justice so much, Cartoon Network ruined my life as it is nothing like it used to be. I don't even watch it anymore cause once you get into something good they just cancel it. Snyder makes it seem like he'll be missed or something, uh no! I'm celebrating!

If that's the case, I'm willing to bet that they'll be plenty of folks celebrating his departure, since I've heard that not too many people liked how he ran Cartoon Network over those past six years...

You don't even know how good this news is for CN watchers. Heck, I'm happy right now! Nothing can make my smile go down at the moment. I feel bad that I'm celebrating someone stepping down, but I didn't like any of what he tried to do with CN. The only good things to come from his run as president was Adventure Time, Regular Show, and Gumball. All the reality stuff was terrible Incredible Crew, just... no.

I agree! Whoo hoo!

Just hopin the next person can do a better job, or at the very least no worse. I'd hate lose someone bad to someone worse.

I don't think it can get any worse. There's nothing left that they can cancel. They no longer have anything to offer me so they can do what they want but I am hoping they restore to its former glory
