Immediately thought of the scene where Crona kills his/her mother. If that's recently been released in the US, that would make the story quite coherent, although of course that's still not an excuse.

I would just ignore the details that have been given to the press, since it's clear they don't really know what they're talking about.

This is stupid excuse by girl with deep issue. Criminals and insane people blaming all kinds of stupid things over the years. Twinkies defense anyone? Even people in media want to blame anything but really causes. We become society were people or real cause of it don't take blame anymore in a lot cases.

Please tell me that I'm not alone in finding a lot of the reaction here distasteful. The careless misrepresentation of Soul Eater is dumb, but the reaction here has exceeded the criticism its merits.

Some people are jumping up and down going, "lol, blame parents m0ar," another starts rooting for a preposterous lawsuit by anime distributors, making meaningless canned proclamations about society flimsy pretenses and we've even had a few start creating imaginary experts on the news to sneer at. The intensity and tenor of these responses is absurd. Nobody here has been hurt by this, there will be no consequences for the comics or cartoons that you like because of it and ultimately we know precious little about the circumstances

What there is a little girl who is clearly mentally ill and possibly with a family with more than its fare share of imperfections who has done something bad, although I doubt that she really understands it, as a byproduct. These are tragic circumstances, but they've been reduced to a pretense for smug, self-satisfied judgements from people with no real investment or connection them who're getting high off of being jackasses together.

This Florida cop knows nothing about the otaku culture.
If he doesn't like this type of manga or is disturbed by it, that's his problem.

I dunno I find it pretty funny especially after a news anchor had said "Slenderman is tied to Soul Eater"

Just remember that when you hear... basically anything else in the news. They aren't any better informed on politics, history, religion, science, etc. etc. etc.

when someone has bad parents, or just unfortunate life then anything can inspire him to do whatever. In short the thing that inspired them is always innocent. Cool

This is honestly mindblowing. Also the fact that Soul Eater, is mixed with Slenderman and Arson. I mean WTF do they have to do with each other? Unless she thought Shinigami was Slenderman (which is quite the twisted idea) and even then, the idea that Soul Eater could prompt arson is beyond me.

Not only that but reading here that the media apparently mistook what Soul Eater was and linked as a violent site connected to Slenderman? I mean if the media is that misguided, then no wonder that anime and games are often put to blame for this kind of incidents when they should be looking at other factors that could easily be the real problem, ergo parenting issues.

If the kid is dysfunctional by some way, be it raising, environment, bullying, etc. Then parents should stand up and have their kids checked. I'm not sure and I couldn't say it is the case here, but a lot of parents avoid taking their kids to the psychologist out of fear that the kid may be "crazy" when it has a "problem" that is to be treated. If this was such case I wouldn't be surprised.

This is just like the posters on last week's Answerman who were ranting about Customs officers acting under the assumption that all anime/manga is child porn, despite being informed that the handful of cases they're citing are only a tiny fraction of the amount of people coming from Asia who are traveling with manga and anime and who do get searched daily.

Similar to the Customs issue, there are people in the media that are well aware of what anime and manga are and may possibly be fans of it themselves. There are also many more people in the media that understand how to use Google and are willing to invest the 20 seconds or so that is necessary to conduct a search for "Soul Eater".

The media is out to sell their product. What will sell more - Informing unsuspecting readers that the girl had read about killing others or that she was a fan of a Japanese comic series?

Clearly, this girl and likely her entire family could use some serious counseling. I really hope that she gets it and can recover from this.

"If the kid turns f***ed up boy they had nothing to do with that. 'Must the kids in the parking lot he hangs around with.' Parents have to be the most full of s*** people in the world. Think of this way they've got it both ways. If he's a loser boy they had nothing to do with that. But is he a winner, got a scholarship or something like that, man they're the first ones out there raising their hands trying to take a little credit. It's a nice frame of mind if you can talk yourself into it." -George Carlin

However I think its more psychological than parenting. Even if she's a single mother it can be hard, my brother and I were raised by our widowed Mom, but we played GTA on the comp, Mortal Combat and listened to heavy metal. We are just fine functioning people in society and pay our taxes. She needs help for now. Hopefully this will sort things out and no one was hurt.

Seriously? Linking it to Soul Eater? Sure Soul Eater is an action manga, but I see no similarities to what she did. Poor girl, she really needs help. It seems like something is really wrong.

this is pure stupidity and ignorance. news media will do anything for a story these days. they want to blame something they don't understand and think its cute. but forbid they ever find the truth of poor parenting and the school systems failing attempts to stop bullying.

Agreed here.

And where is anyone saying anything about Soul Eater being banned or hurt? The girl said she was inspired by it and Slenderman. They are reporting what she's saying. (Inaccurately in some cases.) That's it. They aren't blaming either for her actions.

Everyone is whipped into a frenzy to immediately defend the comics/characters that aren't even under attack. And please, stop blaming the parenting itself. Some people just aren't wired like the norm. Not that there aren't possible problems--it is much to early to tell. It's too early to say anything definite, other than that the books aren't the root cause.
