Lucky Star finally getting a North American BD, huh?

Might we thus get the same for the rest of the significant and classic Kyoto Animation works soon? Like Air, Kanon, and The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya? That'd be grand, especially since I'm not in the financial position to import their JP BD's. Razz

they no longer have Air. it expired the same time as Darker than Black. same thing will likely happen with Kanon as well.

Looks like it finally time to get Index 2, and Guilty Crown. Definitely getting lucky star

Did they dub the OVA for Lucky Star? There is nothing in the listing that says it will be sub only.

A rather underwhelming July 2016 slate with all those S.A.V.E. rereleases. I have a love-hate relationship with Guilty Crown, but this cheaper box might convince me to finally get it.

I don't know how significant and classic Air is, but I am not aware of any plants to release it and Kanon on BD. I imagine that Haruhi Suzumiya is getting a fancy box in addition to standard BD/DVD releases.

Hmm, not sure if Lucky Star needs a BD upgrade. Hopefully we'll get a review or two for it.

Glad to see the complete S2 for Magical Index. Picked up the first season during the holiday sale, so this will be good to complete it.

Other than Yona of the Dawn's second half, a mostly underwhelming release slate for July.

Despite the ED credits-mangling, that Sekirei collection does seem tempting, especially given the speculation that Funi won't have the license all that much longer. And at least there's a silver lining in the spate of SAVE releases; none of them appear to be DVD-only for series previously made available on Blu-Ray.

I would assume it's not dubbed unless we get explicit confirmation that it is. With past license rescues, Funi generally has left undubbed followups/add-ons sub-only, as with the Vandread recap OVAs and the "Legend of Phoenix" Kaleido Star OVA. Not to mention still leaving those .hack// OVAs completely sub-only. It's even less likely that they'd reach out to California studios to get the same cast back, given the extra expense involved.

The ripping scene seems to be of the opinion that it's a so-so upscale at best: not worth the full 1080p treatment. Might be worth upgrading if you've got the cash lying around, but those who managed to get the Bandai DVDs and are satisfied with them probably aren't missing out on much. (Unless that OVA actually is dubbed...)

End credits mangling?

Yeah, I got CEs too (3 of the 4 since the 4th was never released(made?) Evil or Very Mad). Guess unless a review says something to the contrary, I don't even need to bother.

Some episodes had scrolling credits overlaid over action, and in cases where Funi apparently couldn't get clean versions of them, they did stuff like this:

Compare to the original:

There was a sizeable set of Funi releases around ~2009-2011 that suffered from shenanigans like these, including Ragnarok the Animation, My Bride is a Mermaid, and Birdy the Mighty Decode. And on a related note, their Trigun release used the same OP for all episodes instead of the unique openings that made it into Geneon's Remix release.

It just hit me that Funimation is being very cheap with their sub-only, DVD-only releases for July. On the one hand people could be upset that in addition to not having dubs, they are not even offering BD's. But on the other hand this could be taken as Funimation delivering on the notion (IIRC around the time of their OniAi release) that they rather offer inferior releases than no releases at all.

I hope that this makes Funimation consider at least doing a sub DVD release for the Tatami Galaxy and other older titles they have in their streaming library. And speaking of that, where is a disc release of Barakamon? Almost 2 years have passed since it began airing.

Oh, didn't even realize that. Guess you wouldn't without seeing the original. Thanks for letting me know.
I remember the Mermaid issue though, a single static screen instead of it being animated iirc.
One of the reasons I got the Remix release was for the proper ops. Odd that Funi didn't use that.
Dare I ask what happened to Birdy?

That would put me in the first camp. I have gotten to the point where if something is not released on BD that either had an HD stream, or was previously released in JP on BD, I will not buy. Very sad that both Shonen Hollywood sets are DVD only as well as Yatterman Night; 3 releases I wanted to support but will not now because of the inferior release.
