Not at all. A character can be recognizable by means of being seen in promotional material, screenshots, etc associated with the series. For some, it can also simply be because a user remembers the character from seeing a picture of him in a blog post.
Take an example I have already brought: Doraemon. Would anyone here be satisfied with the justification, "Well, he was easy to guess in the character game, so the quotes must be easy to guess" if I were to start spamming Doraemon quotes? I doubt it.

Did that happen? *Looks* Guess it did, but that image has been removed and I don't remember why I thought it was the wrong character.

Well, now I know which series it is, but I never watched past the first episode of that one so I have no clue about the context or who the speakers are. 
(And if it is the series I think it is then you're overestimating its popularity, Hikari14.)

I think this was the pic. I guess it was only his partial face. Certainly not an easy pic, but that was only like a month after the show had stopped airing though the pic itself is from episode 22.

It has a comparable number of ANN ratings to fairly popular titles like Erased, SAO2, Nanoha. Not too farfetched a claim to popularity in this case.

I'm pretty sure she's a girl. She does tend to favour such fujoshi bait shows I've found, but that doesn't necessarily she's seen/remembers all of them.
