I remember the first time I'd learned that parts of Sailor Moon (my gateway anime) had been based on real life locations besides the obvious ones... Thanks to this book http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/1419608142/, and plenty of Googling
This is one of those things that would be awesome to see more of in Western animation, although I suppose 30m comedies don't create the most pressing desire for a real-life pilgrimage. And South Park only counts so much... But I'd love to see this more in American TV as well. Most shows have a defined setting even though they're filmed in LA, NY, or Vancouver or wherever... Even though location shots are hard, you'd think that Tom's Diner from Seinfeld and the bar from Cheers would give more inspiration to more clearly defining real-life locations that the characters are supposed to be at... That would be cool. |
