No, I'm in the wrong, it's perfectly normal to have lunch with you editor... someone else's editor... in a medium you don't even work in but would just love some connection to your name...

Oh no, Makoto Shinkai has a friend and she's a lady, he must loooooove her!

Whether it is the media, village gossip, or personal speech, as with all bad things spoken, it can never be unsaid or unthought. Whether true or lie, he will have to deal with this in his private married life also. Best of luck.

I'm waiting till we have more evidence before assuming the story is even true. Adultery is horrible but it happens all the time with American celebrities, so I'm not sure why anime fans should be shocked it happens with Japanese celebrities too.

Because Japan's views on adultery are kind of shaky.

This is what I hate most about this. Anyone who is remotely famous in Japan has to appear as if they are friendless, especially when it comes to someone of a different sex. All it does is make people afraid to actually develop normal healthy relationships. I don't give a flying f*ck if he is having an affair, to be frank, but no one should bat an eye if someone is having lunch with someone who isn't the same gender as them.

I think men who cheat on their wives are utter scum. That being said, there is literally no evidence presented that indicates that he was cheating on his wife. Having lunch with someone doesn't mean they were sleeping together. Everyone associated with putting this story out deserve nothing but contempt and disdain.

That smells of slander. He has been expressing his sympathy for the South Korean animators with whom he worked on the film. Apart from the fact that he talked about the importance of Korean studios for the Japanese anime industry. I think someone is trying to hit Shinkai down.

Well, this should have been expected after the Makoto Shinkai turned into Mega Shinkai.

I don't understand why a sports magazine is investigating the private life of an anime director to begin with?

Considering ANN gives usu. lists their sources, I find this very article about this alleged affair more credible than the journalist alleging this affair.
