Episode 9

It looked like Uramichi might have met a colleague he could relate to as someone who is frustrated with dealing with the work put onto him, the guy from sales who somehow had to turn Uramichi's awful drawing turned character without his permission. Sadly the guy turns out to be a total sleaze ball that is cheating with multiple women, harasses the guy from digital planning along with one of the girls that called.

Anyway, Uramichi is joined in his bed by a plushie of that character, and a bodysuit of it (on a mannequin) that the sales guy threw into the prizes to try and get rid of.

Episode 10

Their summer music video came out, and it is hilariously bad. Mostly showing them in front of animated backgrounds that could have been done in studio, the real life settings not convincing as summer, not really hiding that they are freezing during it, and I think the director showed up in several scenes.

And to twist it around more, the director decides that now in the sizzling heat of summer is time to do a winter version, which has them needing to be in winter clothes outdoors (at the park for some reason). Arguably worse this time, where the heat is practically killing the poor actors as they approach probably having heatstroke, funny but also quite sad. And then Kumatani evidentially had enough of the abuse, and forced the director into his costume to have a taste of what they have had to deal with. The director passing out almost straight away.

A theme popping up in the episode was "harassment", something a kid asked, and flashes that showed us that Kumatani has a very low threshold for it, having punched his previous boss for harassing a poor homeless kitten. Harassment gets described by Uramichi as something as simple that nursery aged children learn about it in treating others how they would like to be treated, but also something transparent that adults can miss it, that the word harassment is used to give that invisible thing colour.

The director seems to be afraid of Kumatani a bit now, but at least seems to have made him back off of some of his unreasonable demands. That man has probably been a harassment suit waiting to happen. But they also apparently finished most of the work on the winter video pretty much the day after filming, which makes the fact that they were forced to do it in the opposite season the more ridiculous. The winter video was even less convincing than the summer one.

Episode 11

Ouch, I felt this episode. Uramichi got a kink in his neck, and had to continue the physical part of his job. I have had my neck end up like that a few times, and the idea of having to actually force your neck in turning it, sounds like pure torture.

And maybe I am reading it wrong or too hard, but I actually found the free sample song interesting in this episode. I was thinking that as usual it would just be cynical, taking a free sample that tastes good, but when you get home it just tastes like normal bread. But more of the lines kind of pointed almost healthily, addressing that the problem was not the bread, but their home, which my interpretation was getting something new and different, but when you get home (your own head) it doesn't live up to it. Which I see as being about depression, that when you are depressed, even something new and exciting isn't going to live up to expectations, because depression can sap your feelings, where something you thought would make you happy doesn't. But rather than just cynical the song said that you should still try again, to not just give up on something new and exciting, because maybe depression takes.

I do think that I am maybe inserting things too much, because I wasn't really sure how to interpret the lyrics with showing Uramaki clearly not really happy about wearing a bread helmet. While at the same time thinking it could be relevant to Uramichi, where really he probably should be enjoying his interesting career meaning a lot to these kids, but sometimes he is just numb, even if he can still appreciate some things, like what actually made him start crying in the episode. For people of my generation, some of this might even be relevant, considering the reception to the recent video by Steve Burns.

And lastly, I kind of quickly picked it up that if Uramichi was picking out doll stuff at a toy store, chances were high that it was probably for a niece. That does seem to imply is on some level of communication with his sister, on friendly terms maybe.

I thought the song was pointing out some cynical response to marketing (which I guess it still could be), but then I realized as it went along that they were saying that the free sample was so good because they were attracted to the salesperson behind the counter who gave it to them, and so would go back to that bakery to see them again, even knowing that relationship was just an illusion. Better than being lonely at home. In other words, it was the trope that food tastes better when eating with friends, even if the friends aren't actually your friends.

I loved Right-Left Man's outfit. Now I need one of those dolls. I think Kikaku has more piercings in his head than I've ever seen on any anime character (not counting Killua's brother's transformation pins in HxH). I counted about 20 holes plus the gauge. Also got a kick out of the eyecatch with God of Shiso's face being pixelated like porn.

Kumatani is quite adept at slyly messing with Usahara's mind.

Ep 12

That was fun learning more about Kumatani and Usahara's background. Now I see how the former got so skilled at smacking down the latter. Like the defiant eating of the peanut. Very Happy

Didn't learn a lot more about Uramichi, except that he was so detached and insular that he didn't even know his roommates' names after living with them for apparently weeks or months.

My biggest question though is how did the volleyball team place second in the men's gymnastics competition?

Episode 13 (finale)

A shame to see the series end, but also as pretty much said in the episode, also kind of good. At least good to see the show end while good. And indeed, as expected it managed to make me laugh, but really that is pretty much cheating when it is putting Uramichi in another ridiculous outfit that his co-workers can barely look at without laughing.

I really enjoyed this show, where its comedy hit me in the right spot, I loved its mix of every day cynicism, with touches of hope, and characters that as adults are easy to sympathise with and laugh at. Certainly also worth mentioning that the voice acting was top notch, it really coming across that they recognised how much animation was needed, and focused on the voice acting.

My rating is going to be Very good (8/10), easily my favourite comedy of the season, and possibly my favourite show of it. Comedies have reached points like that before, such as Non Non Biyori, but this had a different feel compared to that sort of show that really used things like atmosphere, which if Uramichi did it the atmosphere would probably be something like depression. Which I think does speak in favour of being able to make comedy out of, well, relatable problems. Perhaps mostly only let down by not really doing anything really impressive visually.

The other thing I like is how the series pokes a stick in the eye of all those people who insist that exercise is the sure cure for depression.

Have you noticed that Uramichi just sublimates into sports? Not only in the gym, but also at home and at the hot springs.
In the latter case, he was molested by a drunk Utano.
Quote:
And then when Kumagi is sick, the Usahara has it thrown into his face that he is the unpopular costumed character.

That's not the main thing. Usahara shoved the snow down Kumatani's neck, and then abandoned their shared past in college. Although in the past they had so much in common (in the manga, they are actually a couple who broke up because Usahara does not want to admit that Kumatani is not a friend for him, but a guy he likes). And Uramichi knows about it, so in this scene he is especially strict with Usahara.
Do you remember in episode 4 there is a scene after the credits when Usahara calls Kumatani at night? In the manga, it is shown that Kumao did not drop the phone, just switched to another line. And listened to what Usahara was saying.
Quote:
Actually, this sister bit makes me think back to that time he asked Utano if she wanted to go to his gym.

It's much simpler, Uramichi has been in love with Utano since she was an idol.
Quote:
Also everyone coming to Iketeru's defence when Usahara was convincing him into giving money.

In fact, Usahara there is not asking for money from Kumatani, but attention. Have you noticed how he climbs to hug?
Quote:
And the part to make me most burst out laughter, when the animal mascot characters forgot that they had to draw their fathers as animals, and so just drew on the animal ears.

Have you noticed that Kumatani's father treats him badly, and Usahara's father is clearly drunk? They are specially shown large.

And both say that they haven't seen their fathers for a long time, and that they love them, but it's awkward to look into their eyes.
Uramichi says at the end that it is not necessary to condemn their fathers, it is for Usao and Kumao.
