There is not much to recommend about the first movie, seeing as most of the material will be very familiar to those who watched the first season of the franchise as it effectively rehashes the first two episodes with a few extras thrown in. In fairness, the action scenes focus on the floor bosses which were the big highlight of the Aincrad arc of this franchise, and there's still entertainment to be had as the process is repeated but with fancier bells and whistles attached.

Absolute newcomers to this franchise who didn't know what to expect should be reasonable satisfied with what the first move had to offer.

Scherzo of Dark Nigh Review:

If the first movie was largely disappointing to some fans of the franchise because of its rehashing of material aired in the very first season, the second movie could be qualified as an improvement simply because viewers who have not read the source material are now treated to something completely new that wasn't covered in the first animated season.

Much has been made about how the first movie introduced a new character who ultimately plays no further part in the main Aincrad arc despite prominently featuring in the first movie. The sequel has considerably reduced the spotlight on that character, but the role played by this character remains important even though fans of the original animated series and the original novel line have long noticed a considerable discrepancy which will somehow need to be resolved if and when this series of movies comes to a conclusion.

The movie follows up on the first one in putting most of its action budget on the battles with the Aincrad floor bosses. Unlike the huge set-piece affairs which the second half of the first season presented, the battles in this movie are closer to the Gleam Eyes arc in the first season, albeit with more people than that particular floor boss. Although there's less variety in the action compared to the first movie, the second piece sequences have had a lot of work put into them and the end result should be satisfactory to most casual viewers.

As for the plot, this is set in the fifth and sixth floor of the 100-floor Aincrad Tower. Although Kirito, Asuna and the others are no longer absolute beginners in the full version of the death game, momentum towards clearing the Tower is only just building and two player guilds are providing most of the manpower towards this task. Kirito, Asuna and other front-line players not part of the two main guilds also participate in boss battles, but they have started to realise that momentum towards clearing the Tower will stall unless the two guilds stop getting at each other's throats because of their competitive natures and diametrically opposed playing philosophies. When an accident to Asuna starts a chain of events driving the plot for this movie, Kirito, Asuna and a few hand-picked allies are racing against the clock to finish a floor guardian on their own as the stakes are high and failure would potentially doom the player base to a slow death in the virtual world.

There are a few cameos in the second movie, as well as considerable foreshadowing of events narrated later in the main line of the series. Personally I thought the pacing for this movie was just right; I didn't think the movie felt like a drag at any point and the final boss battle was well choreographed and set to a very unique music score (as always by Kajiura Yuki). Common themes in both Progressive and the main line of novels are elaborated on somewhat in this movie, while the relationship between Kirito and Asuna (who are party members and partners at this stage) continues to develop as they continue working together to finish Aincrad for both themselves and everyone else in the virtual world. Other important characters like Kibaou are also given their due in this movie, as there is sufficient contrast in their conduct in this movie compared to what viewers might remember about them in the latter part of the Aincrad arc.

A special mention goes to the "new" character Argo, who at this point is the server's premier information broker and counts Kirito and Asuna as frequent customers. There WAS an information broker in the original series during the Silica and Sachi guild story arcs, but she wasn't really prominent in the first season. If Argo is that same broker from those arcs, she's given a bigger role in this movie and plays her part both on and off the battlefield.

In short, this movie is a better watch than the first one because it's got fresh material and delivers entertainment, albeit very familiar to established fans of the franchise. Still plenty of questions to answer before the "Progressive" side-stories end and there's a merge with the mainline, but future movies if planned will hopefully answer them and not leave behind glaring plot holes or inconsistencies requiring even more retcons than there already are for this franchise.
