Don't you mean "ruin the country"? Or maybe "run the country into the ground"?

Anyway, I checked this list and sure enough, these characters basically all seem to share the same stereotypes about Americans in anime. I'd like to see a list of American characters in anime who aren't loud-mouthed, rash, beer-swilling, etc., if any exist. ^^;

Well, there is Marvel Frozen from Aura Battler Dunbine that didn't exhibit the usual stereotypes of American characters in anime.

Oh, there's also Kanuka Clancy from Patlabor who also doesn't fit those stereotypes, either. The thing that I always thought was funny about her character design was the fact that she actually looked Japanese despite being half Japanese, half Caucasian.

Love that Revy is in the list but where's my favorite lovely nun, Rosette Christopher from Chrono Crusade? Without her, this list is blasphemy! Laughing

Sigh, I almost feel sorry for Gia. Everytime one of these lists comes out, people seem to care more about what isn't on them then what is...

I see it less like people getting on her case about it and more like people having fun remembering characters from anime they have seen. It's kind of fun to do, actually.

My favorite American would have to be "K" from Gravitation. Especially when it would break the fourth wall and have the characters wonder how he could get all those guns into the country.

As for the poll. really difficult at first when faced with a list of all those countries. I finally had to just think hard about which character consistently got a laugh out of me; Canada. (never gets enough love, always makes me smile).

Layla Hamilton and half the cast of Kaleido Star definitely should've been on the list (since it's set in America, I assume that anyone who wasn't designated as being from elsewhere was by default American). With maybe the exception of Jerry the Policeman, I don't remember any particular American stereotypes. The story could have been set anywhere and the "locals" could have been written just the same.

I like this list and hope there will be more like it. Gia,I've got some more ideas for other lists along this theme. How about your picks for the most positive and negative portrayals of America in anime? Also, what are the most bizarre portrayals? What's your opinion of something like that?

Usually on these list, I know several of the characters, but this time around, I only know of America from Hetalia Anime catgrin + sweatdrop

Wow... besides "America" from APH, I'm familiar with absolutely no one on the list. And no love for Brad Crawford??? More's the pity...

My thoughts exactly. Brad Crawford deserves a mention, as he is an American character from Knight Hunters. Unfortunately, he is a lesser known character, because he comes from a lesser known anime. Still though, the lists have contained lesser known characters from lesser known anime in the past. There is no reason why Brad should should get passed over. Just sayin', ya know?

Isn't Asuka German? Don't they make a huge deal about that in the show?

Yup, she's of German/Japanese descent. She just acts like the stereotypical American in anime.

Asuka's a child prodigy (to say the least). How is that a stereotypical American?

A child prodigy isn't something you act like. Asuka is brash and loud and (early on) extremely confident in her own abilities. Much like how a lot of Americans are portrayed in anime.

She's also said to disrespect privacy though, which I've found is a misinterpretation of the closeness in traditional German culture at times.

Roy Focker was from the United States? I was almost certain that he was from the Netherlands. I had always assumed that he was a relative of the famous Anthony Fokker, which would explain the biplane aircraft him and Hikaru/Rick Hunter.
