Maybe they shouldn't speak in fragmented Japanese to begin with?

So the "bi" in "bishounen" does not sound like the "bi" in "bisexual?" This is news to me.

No kidding. Isn't it a rule to change the seiyuu to a male actor when a male character becomes 17? Why they kept Goku with Nozawa all the way to adulthood I'll never know. I know the U.S. dub is crappy, but at least a guy actor made more sense.

Not really, and with the way things are going, Mayumi Tanaka will still voice Luffy even in his 20s and Junko Takeuchi will still voice Naruto whenever he becomes Hokage. I think there's also the perspective of how the Japanese grew up with & cherish the seiyuus over the years. Kinda like how no one can really imagine Bart from The Simpsons without Nancy Cartwright even if he were to grow up, because it's something that sorta becomes part of the character over the years.

Last November a limited edition Escaflowne boxset came out. All 26 episodes HD remastered. I'm REALLY hoping for this to be released in North America but since Escaflowne's popularity has died down so much (heck, it's even hard to find Esca fans here still) i kinda doubt it *sigh* I still want it!
here's one place that's selling it
http://www.play-asia.com/paOS-13-71-a7-49-en-70-27fy.html

If you ever animate it PLEASE let me know in some way or form! I would just love to see that <3

I still find it hard to believe Escaflowne is 10+ years old. Just doesn't feel like it Razz

Yeah absolutely, I'd post it on my DA and stuff...

Ok this is a really big long shot because I'm sure there must be dozens of Wing Goddesses on the net but are you the one who went as Hitomi at Anime North one year?

Never got a chance to cosplay as anyone from Escaflowne yet. I do have a Merle cosplay just sitting here.

Oh, so you go to AN too? Going to AN08? ^^ i'm also wing_goddess on cosplay.com if you ever go there.

I must find your DA... somehow Razz

That's how it was pronounced in the show's dub, as well. Sad

Japanese vowels, unlike in English, have only one sound:
a- "ah"
e- "eh"
i- "ee"
o- "oh" (surprising, no?) Wink
u- "oo"

Yeah I always thought Luffy broke that rule since he's 17 and has Tanaka's voice (though I love Mayumi Tanaka's voice). But you raise an interesting point, Son-kun.

I thought of another example of bad dubbing, though I'm not quite sure if it counts as "dubbing"....I'm talking about some of the voice-overs I've heard in trailers for anime. It seems they don't always bother to teach the announcers how to pronounce Japanese names. The other day I watched a trailer for "Happy Lesson", and the announcer kept pronouncing the main character's name, which is "Chitose", like "Cheetos" or something. And there was a trailer I saw for "The Wallflower" where the announcer was trying to say "bishounen", but the 'bi' was pronounced like it would be in "biennial" or "bisexual." You forgot about "The Melancholy of Hurahi Suzumiya" (Kanon trailer). Sad thing is, I can't believe how many people across the expanse of the Internet jumped on it and said "omg some announcer who's not part of the cast mispronounced a name that's never used in the series the Kanon dub is totally gonna suck they ruined the whole series fansubs forever even though the DVDs have the Japanese audio track RAGE RAGE RAGE" Rolling Eyes

It's a f**kin' hentai script for cryin' out loud; was the original script really such a lofty work of art that some swear words and different euphemisms would really "butcher" it??

Why this week's Answerman generate so much debate? Confused
Apparently you're new here, but every AnswerMan column generates debate, regardless of the column's subject matter. This week's is relatively light in terms of "output" -- more controversial columns would have 12-15 pages or more already.

Interesting. I still think "bye"-shounen sounds better than "bee" shounen, but that doesn't make it more right I suppose.

I wonder if the Simpsons Japanese dub took the Shin-chan route and rewrote the jokes that made references to American popular culture. Then again, there may be more Japanese that are familiar with American culture than there are Americans familiar with Japan.

I watched some Japanese-dubbed episodes of The Simpsons and as far what I can understand, the translation isn't changed too much from the original English version, maybe some phrasing is chnaged, but not too much AFIK.

I also watched some Japanese-dubbed episodes of "The Boondocks" (and everyone knows that series is too way American) and the dub is really good, but the translation is TOO WAY LITERAL (they even keep some ethnic slurs like the N-word untouched in the Japanese dialog even that there is equivalents of many of those words in Japanese)

Evangelion is NOT overrated - as long as you refrain from saying that it is the best Anime ever made. It is the most influential, and perhaps the most well-known. But not the best. That said, it eats other series for breakfast, so to speak...
I have little doubt that those who attack its popularity do not appreciate what EVA did for Anime, and how awesome it was back then.

This argues against Eva being considered overrated better than how I would have put it. Cheers. It is my assumption that when many people claim Eva is "overrated" they are doing so on the basis of it simply being "overmarketed".

As for what I consider to have the most undeserved critical acclaim, I'd initially choose Fruits Basket (none of the characters had me empathising with them, there was no real conclusion) or the Miyazaki films that I keep seeing in HMV on their own little Ghibli shelf (as opposed to being confined to the grubby anime corner like everything else). To their credit I'll admit they're watchable however, so with this in mind I'll propose Yu-gi-oh or something equivalent. Something that has me reaching for the off switch post-haste.

If people don't like Kanon that's fine by them. A lot of people's favorites have been considered overrated thus far, so seeing one of mine on this thread is only to be expected.

YES, YES YES!!!

Because there are other hentai that I've watched that actually stuck to the original script; and wasn't overly treated like a dirty american porno, And it wasn't just used for the sex scenes. Not only that, there were so many other things wrong with the English version too. The VA for Shiraki needed to take some grammar lessons. x_x

But meh. It's fun to only watch to make fun of it. If you didn't watch it, then hush. If you did, to each his/her own.

I mean, I know what hentai is, obviously. But regardless, it still is a series, with a storyline and such, smut or not.

Indeed! American porn is so disgusting. Not like hentai. In fact if there is one thing hentai is known for it is keeping it classy. Well...that or tentacle rape. Wink
