I'm guessing the Ghibli film will predictably win, but that's fantastic for K-On! to have penetrated the mainstream consciousness enough to be noticed by the Japanese Academy.

K-ON! has not won the Animation of the Year award (yet). People are misinterpreting its "Award of Excellence" honor, which is another name for being nominated for the actual top award being given out in March. That's why four other anime films also received the same "Award of Excellence" honor this year.
