So a few days ago, a guy named FILM CRITIC HULK on Badass Digest wrote an article listing reasons "Why You Love Movies." This list inspired a ton of other people to post their own lists, which lead to a remarkable outpouring of love for the medium. You can see it below:
http://badassdigest.com/2012/02/05/why-you-love-movies/ I noticed that a bunch of people on that list mentioned films like Spirited Away and Perfect Blue, so I thought--why not try a list exclusively for Japanese anime? It can be a tv show, or a movie, or even an OAV; all that matters is that it's a list of reasons why you love the medium. Note that this list may very well include spoilers, so be warned! This is about remembering love, not tip-toeing around it. Also, there is occasionally a time and a place to hate on stuff, but this is not it! Some examples to get us started: Because Renton caught Eureka in the sea of colored clouds. Because of the choreographed dance scene from Neon Genesis Evangelion. Because Dennou Coil's beard episode was somehow hilarious and kind of profound at the same time. Because watching Garzey's Wing with friends is one of the funniest communal experiences I've ever had. Because the first appearance of Magia in Madoka Magica was like a punch to the stomach, and I loved it. Because of Chroniko's boots, god bless her soul. Because the ending of Shikabane Hime was a lot more daring than it had any right to be. Because of that scene in The Girl who Leapt Through Time where Makoto takes a running leap, and time stops. Because there's room for both adolescent angst and tea and cake in high school. Because something like Redline can still be made in this day and age. Because Mawaru Penguindrum was made at all. Because Revolutionary Girl Utena couldn't work as well in any other medium. Because of Takaya Noriko screaming in her robot with crossed arms. Because of robots with crossed arms. Because nakama's ultimately what you make of it. Because Hiroko Asahina loved Ayato Kamina. Because he who conquers the left side conquers the world, chief. |

Great selections there, Yamata. Didn't get them all, but then I'm fairly limited in my knowledge right now. Don't worry, I'll catch up.
As for me, I love anime- Because no other animated medium has such a wide range of artistic expression, from the ridiculously hilarious to the emotionally touching. Because, while many movies can give us the sociological impact of cyberisation on the world, none could give us Major Kusanagi. Because I find it personally hilarious when my friends have no idea what I mean by randomly saying "Rastel Maskil Magister!" Because no other animated medium can give such tremendous insight to a culture. I mean, think about it. What western animation correctly portrays the history of a given native tribe? What western animation shows us sociological norms, then expands on those norms into theory? I'm sure one or two could be produced, but not to the scale of impact that anime provides. Granted, anime is not the best way to learn about a culture, but it gives so many great, enticing, and above all entertaining examples, it has to be commented on. Because blue, green, purple, white, and silver hair just freakin' rocks. Because things can be done, and believed, in anime, where in live action it would seem campy, unbelieveable, and low-budget. Because a bad*** chick with a short-spear trumps the super-hacker with a dragon tattoo. Because I said so. *nods* Hehehe, I'm sure I could think of more, but I don't want to toss out a massive list. Because Chiyoko Fujiwara can walk out into the snow and find herself on the moon.
Because Paprika can leap into a television screen and come out of a camera lens. Because a mushi victim can get up from her spinning wheel and leave her shadow behind on the wall. (Nothing in anime has ever given me goose bumps the way that did.) Because I found myself hoping that Nanoka and Koshiro would do the very thing I would ordinarily consider beyond the pale. Because Mireille Bouquet and Yumura Kirika can murder 252 people over 26 episodes (yep, that's almost 10 per episode) and the Paris constabulary never once pays them a visit. Because suicides can be reborn from an egg and sprout angel's wings. Because in House of Five Leaves, having a violent criminal history and a face like a goanna are no impediments to being a lovable character. Because Balsa can have rippling muscles and still be beautiful. And, forgive me for being so obvious and unoriginal, because god wears a bunny suit and plays the guitar! |

Because Mobile Suits are freakin awesome.
Because Vash pulled Wolfwood's cross gun out of the sand. Because Goku's power level is over 9000. Because Ash was attacked by Spearows. Because of Tank and Real Folk Blues. Because of "Speak Like a Child". Because the ending of Berserk is perfect just the way it is. Because the first fifteen minutes of Akira still give me chills. Because I thought I'd pretend I was one of those deaf mutes. Because a "slice of life Samurai mystery character drama" is a thing. Because try as I might, I still can't decide what I think Evangelion means...and that's just awesome. Because even when I've already found so much to like, I've still got FLCL, Utena, Millennium Actress, Tokyo Godfathers, Now and Then Here and There, Kino's Journey, Planetes and Eden of the East that I haven't even had a chance to watch yet. Because just when I think I'm finally losing interest in anime, when I think that just maybe there's no future for me there, I see something like Redline and it blows my [expletive] mind. And, because it couldn't have existed in any other medium. |

Because nothing expresses a frustrated-angry reaction better than a big head.
Because not all cats bite. Because at that age, you WANTED to have your first responsible job delivering packages or scrubbing bathhouses. Because someone can still go out of their way to buy you a railroad ticket. Because no one's surprised to see an alien girl in high school. Because true geeks CAN make ranting speeches in praise of beefbowl or Gundam models. Because we know the cutest girls are always psycho underneath. Because evil aliens aren't really bad, they just haven't seen idol singers before. Because sometimes a rap song can let you say it all. Because Miss Daicon beat both Darth Vader and Voltron. |

Becasue it's much better than the crap that Holly wood regularly reels off and because British soaps are just about people having affairs. Also it's the only piece of media I've watched that wasnt an Afghanistan documentary that made me cry. I also love anime because I love Japanese culture.

Because no other medium does as good a job of capturing the the sheer joy and innocence of childhood (Satsuki and Mei exploring their new home, Murasaki encountering canned food) Because of the moment during Jin-Roh when I did a little double-take and realized I'd completely forgotten that the people on the screen weren't live actors Because of Tohru and Kyo in the rain Because of Haruhiko Mikimoto and Akemi Takada, Kenichi Sonoda and Nobuteru Yuuki Because of bishonen Because of the Sharon Apple concert Because of my experience watching Grave of the Fireflies for the first time, and flat-out bawling aloud for a good third of the movie Because of Kino's origin story Because only in anime can a story be a dark, multilayered, meta-fairy tale and still involve hippo-ballerinas and cats as dance instructors Because of Aria Because of Durarara Because of Sergeant Frog Because of Alien Nine Because it's a medium where titles as diverse as the ones above can all exist and all be *amazing*... where serious thinky drama, smart satire, complex plots, and simple comfort stories can live side by side (sometimes even in the same show!) Because the story of and underdog giving his/her all and coming out on top still has the power to thrill like a life-or-death struggle, whether the contest is soccer, baseball, basketball, tennis, karuta, Go, gymnastics, acting, baking, kendo, judo, or y'know, actual combat. Because of the moment Hasukawa figures out that Shun's not a girl Because of that cool effect they had on Sheryl Nome's hair so that it was sorta-blonde and sorta-pink Because Gankutsuou had an actual worthwhile plot to go along with the funky animation style Because of Kotetsu Kaburagi and Yusuke Urameshi and Noa Izumi and Minorin and Chiba and Dolores Because I'm not a nerd, I'm a specialist! |

Because it's a medium which can chronicle the aftermath of an atomic bomb detonation, delicately relate the potentially incestuous relationship between a brother and sister, and showcase a giant mecha detonating a planet-sized bomb and then returning to Earth 10,000 years later with equal aplomb.

Reading these great moments, most of which I can place in context, makes me relive them again and makes me smile over the happy and fun, and feel sweet sorrow over some of the sad moments... |

Because Ed and Al needed the Philosopher's Stone. Because Hideki picked up Chii. Because Sakura opened the Book of Clow. Because Chiyo-chan is too smart for primary school Because Miyazawa grew to love Arima. Because Tohru embraced Kyo's other form. Because Subaru loved Seishiro. Because there's no other art form as diverse and magical as anime, and no other art form is as beautiful. |

Because Ryou came out of nowhere and steals everyone's thunder and no one but people who own a Wonderswan will understand why. Because Holly rescued her dad from the clutches of evil. Because Shin realized his baby sister grows up to be Celty from Durarara. Because killing someone will a spinning top takes more skill and looks cooler than just shooting them. Because Naruto finds nothing weird in turning into a naked girl to seduce other men. Because Kirino is a bigger geek than any of us. Because Yamada just wants to bang 100 dudes with no strings attached. Because you can use a miniatures action figure to assassinate the Prime Minister of Japan with relative ease. |

Why do i love anime?
It's simple. Anime is fiction. It is a form of art expression. And that alone is enough. But with some real answers: Because a 10-year-old welsh wizard can become the greatest BAMF the world has ever known. Because a single man can grow from a being simple digger to controlling a Mecha millions of times the size of a galaxy. Because a mecha show can start out logical and then derail into utter insanity. Because cute girls can transform into adorable heroines and kick some serious ass. Because there is basically no idea too crazy to have an anime made of it. Because a travelling merchant can find a hot wolf goddess in his cart and travel with her, as they grow closer to each other. Because tits. |

Because Nausicca made the ultimate sacrifice.
Because Nemu waited for Reki. Because Utena was able to make a cold, unfeeling boy like Touga experience love. Because Pazu caught Sheeta. Because Koichi Hayase was such a sore loser he summoned a mecha to a fist fight. Because Inuyasha chose humanity to be with Kikyo. Because I never knew trying to wake someone up with a knife could be that funny Because Yuu will always protect Haruka no matter the dimension. Because even if any communication takes over 8 years to reach your loved ones they will always be in your thoughts, and you in theirs. |
