Expansion Pass adds original story, new challenges, harder difficulty

Nintendo began streaming a new television commercial for its The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild Wii U and Switch game last week. The commercial shows clips of various action scenes and locales from the game.

Nintendo also announced via video that it will offer an Expansion Pass for the game. The Expansion Pass will add more content to the game and cost 2,500 yen (about US$22) in Japan and US$19.99 in North America. It will be available beginning on March 3, the same day as the game's release.

People who purchase the Expansion Pass will immediately get three treasure chests in the Great Plateau, the game's starting area, that will contain additional starting items. Nintendo will release a Cave of Trials challenge, an additional harder difficulty, and additional map functionality in summer for Expansion Pass holders. The company will also release a new original story and new challenges in winter for Expansion Pass holders.

The game will launch on March 3, the same day that the Nintendo Switch platform goes on sale worldwide.

Nintendo revealed the game was in development in 2013 and revealed the first gameplay footage in 2014. Nintendo originally planned to release the game in 2015, but then the company pushed the game back to 2016, and then delayed it again to 2017. While originally slated for release only for Nintendo's Wii U console, the game is now slated for simultaneous launch for both the Wii U and the newly revealed Switch platform.

Nintendo will offer a "Master Edition" of the game. The edition will retail for US$129.99 and include a Master Sword statue, Sheikah carrying case for the Switch, 24-track soundtrack, Sheikah eye coin, and tapestry world map.
