Nintendo Blocks Fan Remake of Super Mario 64

Nintendo of America has filed a copyright claim against a fan-made, high-definition remake of first level of Super Mario 64. The game, which was previously playable and downloadable for free, has been removed from its website.
The website posted Nintendo's notice, wherein the company claims copyright infringement on Super Mario 64, "including but not limited to the audiovisual work, computer program, music, and fictional character depictions."
The game's programmer, Erik Roystan Ross, stated that, while he provided almost all the art and animations himself, he took Mario, Goomba, and Power Star meshes from Super Mario Galaxy, and many of the sounds came from existing Mario games.
Ross also commented that he had hoped the game would be an "educational tool and a novelty," and he did not expect the game to become popular.
