Yeah, that explains it much about the music issue, and yeah, the Eden of the East example was one good note, I also read/heard Speed Grapher was like this as well, I wonder if there's other series that had some sort of example like this.

I remember, watching EotE for the first time on a borrowed Blu-Ray, being weirded out when the OP changed after the first episode for no real reason. Even as part of the answer to a different question, I feel like I have closure to a mystery that bugged me a long time ago.

Ergo Proxy used a Radio Head song as its ending. I guess there was copyright issues when trying to import to the US, because the official Funimation stream on YouTube had the song removed, and the ending was weirdly silent.

Interesting. My Funimation Classic Anime release of Ergo Proxy has Radiohead's Paranoid Android intact. Different rules for physical releases and web based ones I suppose. It must be hell for distributors to find out when they're in the right/wrong. |

It was included on at least part of the the DVD release. I have the release with the thin cases in the box branded with Geneon's logo, and that one definitely had "Paranoid Android" for at least one episode. IIRC, it was replaced with an instrumental of some kind on the majority of episodes. Later re-releases on DVD may have removed the song, though. |

I have a similar/related question regarding JoJo and music, but more regarding the names of characters and stands. Also, are subtitles considered absolute/definitive?... what I'm trying to get at is I find it silly that you can clearly hear the characters say "Crazy Diamond" and "Bad Company", (the character even has Bad Co on written on his collar), but the subtitles say "shining diamond" and "worse company". Does this actually do/change anything legal-wise? or is it just kind of a show of good faith? I would understand if it was dubbed over and was completely replaced, but it seems silly.
If its definitely for legal reason, then would the japanese audio need to be removed/altered to change the names? It sometimes ruins the sense of immersion. Similar to when the JP track uses a character's given name, but the subs use their family name; or when there's a pause in the middle of a sentence so the subs have it in 2 parts, but the sentence structure is different between JP and english so the second parts meaning is subtitled over the first and vice versa. |

Using popular songs has been the norm for JoJo's. Season one used "Roundabout" by Yes for its ED, and the first part of Stardust Crusaders used "Walk Like an Egyptian." Did anyone here buy the season 1 DVD release that came out last year, who'd know if it retained Roundabout or not?
You are correct. Speed Grapher used Duran Duran's "Girls on Film" for its original OP, and Funi had to replace it because they couldn't get the rights to use that song in the US (I can only imagine how expensive it would've been, especially for a series that I don't think was all that popular). @DLH112: Using copyrighted or trademarked names of bands and songs does potentially open up grounds for an infringement claim, should the rights holders choose to pursue one - you'll often see subs and dubs tweaking anything potentially problematic for that reason, just to be on the safe side. Bastard!! is the classic example of that, where half the characters and most of the spells were named after heavy metal bands and performers, and the official subs altered all of them to avoid any potential legal issues. So Whitesnake and Helloween became Whiteosneiki and Harowing, for instance. |

Too bad the set has no proper subs with Japanese dub. I hear even the english dub isn't any good. I wonder if Viz now has the physical release rights to jojo and if so, would they give it a proper release?? |

Again, see WKRP. And we're still waiting on The Wonder Years home video release, even though it was announced not too long ago.
Maybe because it's a younger generation of buyers who wouldn't normally be aware of their music showing interest in it and buying into it. Which the greedheads in the industry still don't seem to get, even after Straight Outta Compton just made a ton of money last year. Anyway, if you were a fan of that movie and 100% cleared music, you should check out The Decline of Western Civilization series next, I guess. DLH: Well, it covers their asses somehow, I guess. WingKing: Those are popular, but old. Though unlike massive Boomer hits being held for ransom, like those of the Beatles, the acts behind the likes of Roundabout have the same attitude I pointed out earlier. They know their shit peaked decades ago, and that anything which makes it seem fresh to a younger crowd is a boon to them. And yeah, it took forever just to get Girls on Film on Vevo. I'll concede that Duran Duran itself hasn't peaked yet, but c'mon. That song is really a relic of a more chauvinistic era that only comes off sensitive to women by today's standards. Give it up, you guys. |

They definately have streaming rights to all of the Jojo's anime. At Anime Boston, their rep plainly said that Viz does have home video rights to Stardust Crusaders(and Diamond is Unbreakable). |

Human Touch by Warren Wiebe was used in After War Gundam X. And in my opinion, it's the absolute best western song used in anime, unless you count Stan Bush's songs in Transformers the Movie but that's a half anime and it most definitely was a decision made on the American side of the production.

I wonder what hoops Trigger had to jup through for their opening of Kiznaiver, because there is no way that opening coincidentally sounds like "Take on me". I wonder if they just payed for the music but not the lyrics.

Here's an odd one. My fansubs of Monster have the ED songs as listed in the ANN encyclopaedia: For The Love of Life by David Sylvian for eps 1-32 and Make It Home by Fujiko Heming for eps 33-74. The official Siren Visual release has the David Sylvian song for the entire series, with the vocal track removed.
The Madman version of Ergo Proxy has Paranoid Android intact in all episodes. @ GATSU, being a young adult when Girls on Film was released I have to take issue with what you say. It was notorious for its depiction of women even then. In fact, sexist music videos are far more prevelent these days compared with the early eighties. |
