One word: Jojo's.
I don't get it. I don't get the characters. I don't get the plot. I don't get why any of it's supposed to be cool. To me it comes off like the fake "feuds" in pro-wrestling given a bit more detail. |

Haikyuu and Kuroko's Basketball are mine. I just don't see the appeal, but I guess they just aren't for me, though I did like Free and Ouran. Which is something I just don't understand about myself.

Personally, I didn't think either Future Diary OR Deadman Wonderland were all that great. The former was one of those things where the longer you think about it, the more you can see the cracks and strings. (In fact, a few of my friends and I agreed that it was pretty awful). With the latter, any chance I had of liking it was completely evaporated by the non-ending. Other than those two, I tend to find myself agreeing with the professionals more often than not. |

I appreciate the chance to express something like this. Maybe we should do this in the video game section too? I was never able to say that I dislike Skyrim without being chastised left and right. Sorry for the distraction =) |

Summer Wars
I won't deny that it's a good movie, but it pissed me off. It probably comes down to a single element: the grandmother (or great-grandmother). It's so obvious you're supposed to admire her and love her as the best character in the movie, but I hated her. I didn't find her harsh attitude to be inspiring but rather uncomfortable. To have a person like that in your life can be soul-crushing, someone who will always criticise you and say that you're not good enough, someone who will push you to your limits until it becomes hard to breathe. And if that is the same person who raises you it can lead to some serious emotional damage. No wonder her grandson grew up to be an asshole. Hell, she tries to murder him at one point and everyone just shrugs it off. So as you can imagine, when spoiler[she died and you were clearly supposed to feel sad] I just went: HELL YEAH! Obviously that's not what the movie had in mind. I suppose the movie also wanted me to be invested in the struggle her family had to go through as a result. But I just didn't care at all. I came in to this movie with high expectations because everyone was saying it was Mamoru Hosoda's best work. Well, in my opinion Wolf Children is his best work. It's actually one of my favourite movies of all time. I love Wolf Children a lot, but Summer Wars I could've lived without. Good movie, but I couldn't stand it. |

I guess my choice would be 5 Centimeters per Second. It just didn't resonate with me on an emotional level which is what I was looking for and expecting. I also found it to be kind of on boring side, and it feels really long even though it's barely one hour. But I guess it does have nice animation and art

For me, the franchise I just don't get is Gantz. I honestly have no idea how anyone enjoyed reading that laughably nihilistic, aggressively misogynistic, and just plain stupid dumpster fire. I am baffled as to how it lasted over 300 chapters, and why so many people are excited when new Gantz properties are announced. I probably sound a bit harsh, and I don't mean to criticize anyone who likes it (you don't need to justify what you like!), but Gantz is basically my manga nemesis. I asked someone i respect why he liked it, and he said he enjoyed the "nihilistic meatgrinder" aspect. Fair enough, but i don't find that enjoyable in the slightest. |

Cowboy Bebop or, oddly, more specifically, anything by Shinichi Watanabe... though I did make it through Samurai Champloo though maybe that was to see if the characters did anything interesting. Yeah, I lost that bet.
He has a very specific lead character in his mind and in his mind that character is cool. Whether samurai, bounty hunter or even a piano player, if you're in a Watanabe series, you're cool. You don't even have to want anything in particular... in fact, it's probably better if you're aimless, aimless people are cool... because you are the lead. And we're stuck with you. I just don't get it. I pick Cowboy Bebop in particular because 9 out of those first ten plots... the ten shows I made it through... were sabotaged by the creative team in a way I would expect a show designed around villain protagonists like thieves would go and I can't even tell why; This is their job, they need money. By simple logic, something should work at some point just to get some money; Even Outlaw Star's Gene Starwind, a loser proclaimed in show, got a bounty or mission accomplished every now and then. The 9th episode ended in a success, sort of, it was also the one that introduced Ed and the success was because of Ed. I gave up when episode 10 went back to the "losers are cool and losers are we" formula. I probably should just watch the broadcast episodes. {Looks at what was first shown} Yeah, that would have been better. A lot less pain. |

It already got mentionned, but 5 Centimeters per Second.
I was totally bored, nothing felt special in my eyes, and I really disliked how the song at the end was sounding way too amateur-ish. I don't get why people like it. Also, a bit more recent, there's Kyoukai no Kanata. I had friend saying it was one of the best thing they ever saw, and for me, I couldn't even finish the first episode. It felt cliché as fudge, and it was a total borefest. |

There are certain shows that I see get praised a lot that I never really connected to, but the first that come mind for me is Macross Plus.
I get why it's popular - it's a fantastic looking production, and there's a lot of cool sci-fi concepts at work. But I just couldn't connect with the characters at all. The central character conflict is basically a dick-measuring contest between two petty dudes, and both are soaked in the sort of tortured machismo I find groan-inducing. Even by the standards of other Macross leads I found Isamu insufferable, and it just sort of glosses over spoiler[Guld being an attempted rapist] left me both scratching my head and with a bad taste in my mouth. |

If it makes Amy feel any better, I think Endless Eight is when more or less the entire world gave up on Haruhi as a major franchise. I remember there was huge excitement over the show's second season, until people realized that eight of the thirteen new episodes were all REMAKES OF THE SAME EPISODE. I've rarely seen a fandom turn on a show so quickly, but in this case I'd say it was well-deserved.
As for my choice for this topic, I'm going to go with Fairy Tail. I just don't find it interesting at all. I like the basic idea of a show about a rowdy magic guild, but its execution just squanders that premise. Natsu is just an incredibly boring protagonist, with nothing to distinguish him from other shonen leads except a tacked-on tendency toward motion sickness (that goes away when the plot needs it to.) The series just kind of wanders from arc to arc with no real sense that it's going anywhere. I stuck with the series all the way to the Oracion Seis arc, but around the time that blue-haired twerp from Ezra's past showed up AGAIN I just gave up. I'm glad other folks enjoy it, but it's not for me. |

I've always had a weird relationship with Clamp, too. For the most part, I like the concepts they come up with. However, the execution of said concepts invariably leaves a lot to be desired. Plus, their fondness for abandoning series has never really sat well with me.
I feel the same way - not just about Monogatari, but all of Nisio Isin's non-Medaka Box works. His super-charged stream-of-consciousness writing style has never really appealed to me. |
