I hate to say it, but the fact checking in this article is bad. You nearly quote the article and all its faults.

Samurai Champloo DVD #1 is an MSRP of $29.98, not $23. The UMD only has half the episodes of the DVD, making the MSRP of $14.98 logical.

Appleseed UMD has an equal MSRP to the DVD release at $19.98.

This news is a bit old, TRSI has had the UMDs on presale for over a week now, plus, TRSI is only charging $14.98 for SC and $19.98 for Appleseed

Personally, I think this whole deal of creating video media for a portable is a waste. That's what portable DVD players are for.

I mean at this time the system already cost the price if not more than a portable DVD player. Why would anyone want to pay for a "low quality" version of a film just to take with them? How many are willing to put that much effort into building a collection of movies on UMD? Unless, they can incorporate some function where consumers can download films, like they've discussed in an earlier topic onto the system for a small fee then that might be worthwhile. Otherwise it's just stupidly redundant. They already tried doing this before with 2 other systems. One I think was made by 'Tiger Electronics' and the other was for the 'GBA SP'. Of course this was targeted toward kids. But c'mon why would any kid want to watch 'Pokemon' on their GBA when it's on TV everyday? Rolling Eyes

Just more marketing ploys to get consumers to support it with their heart and soul. Not to mention proving a point that the developers (Sony) can take their game system one step further. Yet, people have already complained about how problematic the system hardware is.

This is just my opinion. I'm not totally knocking it because this is technology moving up. No matter how useful or stupid the results are. I just wouldn't waste my money on buying films to play on a game system. But hey? To each his own. Wink

"That's what portable DVD players are for."

Which would require you to own a portable DVD player [or laptop]. The fact is, people are not buying their PSPs to watch movies. I could understand your argument if that was the only goal of a PSP purchase, but first and foremost it is a gaming machine. Secondly it plays movies, audio files, displays pictures, can be used as a web browser, etc.

Yes, there are better dedicated devices for all the things mentioned, but if you already have a PSP, why not enjoy it to its full potential?

Actually, the quality on them is not that low. (On both the PSP UMDs and the GBA shows.) My daughter has a couple of the Fairly Oddparents carts for the GBA and she watches them when we're on long trips. When she gets bored, she changes them out for one of her Dora the Explorer video games.

As for the PSP, it comes with Spider-Man 2 and it has some amazing quality on it. We've also put a couple of my daughter's shows on it for her.

Think of it this way. Instead of having to carry: a PSP (for games), a portable DVD player (for movies), an iPod (for music)...you can carry the PSP and get all of that in one.

The luminance and resolution are so low on these things that there's going to be a lot of youngsters needing serious opthmalic treatment in their adulthood. A lot of people wearing thick glasses, or needing eye surgery.

I really hate having to repeat myself twice, so I'll stop looking at these unoriginal posts reguarding the UMD news.

People, check the More on UMD article for a post I've already made reguarding all of this. It's pointless to discard something new that isn't that good if what's important is the progress, potential, and most of all it's future influence and success. It's good to know they're supporting it.

Now to see if there is continued support for anime episodes, unlike how carts for DBGT and Pokemon quickly stopped on the GBA after the novelty wore off. (And besides, episodes were erratically placed in regard to episode number anyways on those things.)

Seems insanely pointless to me: buy a large (1 GB or whatever) mem stick, rip your anime dvds and encode them with an mpeg4 codec and you have more episodes than a single UMD will fit, and you can just use the DVD's you already own for it.

The only problem is that the limitations placed on the PSP's memory stick video playback is this: There is one specific MPEG4 codec, the maximum bitrate is at 768 kilobits/second, and the maximum resolution of the movie will not reach the same resolution as the UMD formats, due to restrictions that Sony placed on the machine.

To own the whole collection of Samurai Champloo, you would need to buy 13 UMD disc. How practical. On the other hand, Samurai Champloo is episodic, so you can pretty much carry any disc and enjoy a full story right thurrrrrr.

I suppose that in Japan, the percentage of those who watch anime and play videogames are pretty high. So they get the best of both world on 1 system. It would work if it had been on dual-layer Mini-DVDR though. Therefore you get 4 gig of dataspace along with the ability to play it in any stand-alone-dvdplayer.

I have a psp an I have bought serveral movies an games. I however I use it more for a mp3 player then anything but I have also downloaded the manga, the anime trailers, an I have put my photo's on there as well. You guys underestimate the psp. It beats a portable dvdplayer, mp3 player an any car audio/video I mean it's great even for kids nothing like going places an having stuff to do an music to listen while riding in a car (or driving if you can pull it off ^.~) I have hero, kill bill vol.1, an house of flying daggers on umd all of which have very nice picture an I am gonna import the naruto movie for it as well. Hell I have no life but after my hap ki do class I sat at meijer's for 3 an a half hours waiting for the Star Wars: ROTS game for ps2 an had nothing better to do so I bought a UMD an sat down an watched it while waiting..... clearly the psp is where it's at, even at work I listen to the music I put on there it seriously kicks ass!!

Ah, of course. I didn't account for the possibility of Sony intentionally crippling the uses of their so called "walkman of the 21st century" Rolling Eyes
Thanks for the info, regardless.

I read in an interview that UMD will be PSP exclusive. Whether this changes or not, I don't know, but it seems incredibly stupid to me. How can they expect a format to be accepted if it's not widely compatible? Isn't that what killed Beta?

I swear, I'm trying to find excuses to buy a PSP, but they're doing a pretty damn good job of convincing me I shouldn't (no games that interest me, the afformentioned crippling of mp4 playback as well as UMD being PSP exclusive, dodgy buttons not considered defects [though I hear they fixed that issue]). If Sony didn't own game franchises I love, I'd just steer clear of their products altogether.

The PSP also gets 4 hours of battery life when using it. Not much at all.
