Oh man, I hope they do the same for America someday, I'm betting Howl's Moving Castle would be on that top 5 list if they were to poll here though. I was surprised to learn it is the favorite of a lot of people I know; mine is Spirited Away.

In America, I would expect the top to be:
1. Princess Mononoke (fan favorite)
2. Spirited Away (Most notable)
3. Nausicaa ("Connoisseur" pick)
4. Totoro ("the one you show your kids")
5. ???
I could think of arguments for several Ghibli films in the last slot. If Howls, then there's enough "mainstream"(ish) fans to push a more recent title (same if anything AFTER Howls). If anything before Mononoke, it means there's enough hardcore, old school fans to push their favorite, plus Mononoke & Spirited Away soaked up the "recent" vote.

I'm quite honestly surprised Tonari no Totoro/My Neighbor Totoro wasn't in the top 5 since Totoro is the mascot of the studio and probably its most iconic character overall.

Nausicaa is not a Ghibli movie. It was animated before Ghibli existed. It was done by Topcraft.

Howl's Moving Castle, the first one you ever remembered seeing in an actual theater after you'd first heard of Ghibli, after seeing Mononoke or Spirited.
Not my pick, just usually turns out that way.

They actually just did a Ghibli event here in NYC at East Villiage Cinemas. They played a bunch of Ghilbi movies throughout the summer.

Although it was only a preliminary poll, I'm glad Kiki was part of the top five. (*≧∀≦*)

I'd vote Grave of the Fireflies. I don't like the other movies.

Aw, no Porco Rosso. But I know I am in the minority for picking that as my favorite and one I'd like to see on a bigger screen.

Nope, common misconception. It's true that the studio technically didn't exist when it was made, however, the production staff was nearly identical to the one that would go on to make Castle in the Sky, and the studio has long since owned the rights for the film. Hence why every modern release of it has the Studio Ghibli branding on the box and the logo playing before the film. That's why your copy of the movie says "A Studio Ghibli Film" on it.
My pick for the movie to receive another theatrical run would be Princess Kaguya, because that didn't make near the money it needed or deserved to, which is a darn shame. But I know that would never happen. Out of the choices here I'd say Spirited Away, because it's, well, Spirited Away. I'd say all the others have a decent shot though, based on their age and classic status.

Kiki's Delivery Service, Howls Moving Castle, and Spirited Away would be my choices.

Yeah, but that's liking saying the 1995 Evangelion series is a Studio Khara show since Gainax no longer have the copyright to it, whilst Khara does. It evidently is not and the same applies for Nausicaa.

I wouldn't mind watching Kiki's Delivery Service for the second time, since I enjoyed Kiki's adventurous acclimation into city life.

Thank you Mr. Pedantic for your insight. I'll say that for all pratical purposes and for the rest of the world Nausicaa is a Studio Ghibli production. When it sells it sells under the Studio Ghibli banner. When it's advertised it's advertised under the Studio Ghibli brand.
You get the picture don't you ? Nausicaa is as much a Studio Ghibli film as Mononoke Hime or Kiki's delivery service.
