The edits aren't suprising considering language and violence is more acceptable in America than sex and nudity.

The night that I watched this my mom was up and she just had to walk in the moment they showed the ukiyo-e scenes at the beginning... Rolling Eyes now she's freaking out and questioning my morality.Although those scenes were pretty weird.

This ep was originally down as TV-MA. Guess they got cold feet at the last moment.

Meanwhile in Canada it's the exact opposite. Isn't that weird? I think I like Canada's standards better. Being naked is pretty standard. Being brutally murdered, not so much.

True, but they still have some things to improve on.

It's inconsistant edits that annoy me the most because of their randomness. Also, it's okay to show a woman getting raped, an act of violence, in a painting (minus nipples), but showing a couple having sex, an act of love, in another painting is cut out? That just supports the idea that violence is okay, but regular lovemaking is not.

Remember though, that Blue Gender was over-edited even by the standards of Adult Swim back then. FUNimation didn't want to risk having it sent back to them twice for re-editing, after all.

Di the person who wrote these edits actually watch the original series? The catalog Manzo holds up as evidence was digitally edited in the original as a joke.

And yeah, America are a culture not comfortable with nudity. Well, at least the version of American culture that gets on TV. Still, just a nipple or two is no big deal. At least they showed the episode. Think back to "Outlaw Star"'s Onsen show and you'll see how they've improved.

I was kinda dissappointed when they digitaly removed the 'bad parts.' I mean most of it was from art. Its not like they were really havin intercourse....
I guess thats the other reason why I like subs more than dubs. But from a topic on the anime part of this site has changed my mind on dubs, so I'm trying ( Anime smallmouth + sweatdrop ) t get into more dub and be reasonable. I guess America just isn't ready for cartoons with breast showing once in a while. Maybe some Americans (well not really Americans more like people who arent big fans of anime and get things mixed up and just happens to watch an episode or two..... if this makes snese, hopefully this doesnt start trouble for me.... Neutral ) still confuse it with hentai and angry moms catch there lil 10 year olds watching it and they complain.

Well, the nudity isn't edited from the dub, it is edited from the television broadcast. I'm sure the nudity will be intact on the dubbed DVDs.

There is a huge disconnect in America when it comes to sexuality. I've read that Salt Lake City, Utah (the Mormon capital of the world) has the highest rate (per capita) of pornography purchasing of any other major city in the US. Further, states which push abstinence only sex ed in their schools tend to have a higher rate of teen pregnancy than states with comprehensive sex education programs. On the one hand, the parents groups and religious leaders want to convince us that sex is bad, but on the other hand we are crazy for sex.

Personally, I'd love to be able to watch soft core pornography in prime time television (soft core since hard core is probably a little over the top, still, for TV). If you don't want to watch it, don't tune in and you won't get offended.

Well I suppose that the aptly named fifth episode of Samurai Champloo, Utter Indifference - Artistic Anarchy, was indeed shown indifference.

To me it is a shame that anime must be edited for TV for many reasons, the main being how the editors infringe upon the creativity and artistry of the original piece. Editing anime or anything else for content is a real disappointment. To me the original piece is sacrosanct and should remain unaltered.

If tv stations feel so awful about permitting anime to be aired in it's original form perhaps a disclaimer that says "May contain nudity and corse language" should be added at the beginning.

I guess I have made my point, so now I shall let you have room to make your's.

When did basic cable ever allow nudity? It's either edit out the nipple or censore the nippple or any other nudity, or not have Champloo on adult swim at all.

It's very hard to get around nudity on tv, try watching howard stern on E, all the naked pornstar are censored.

South Park has had quite a bit of animated nudity, and it's on basic cable just like Cartoon Network. There are differences in what different stations will allow, though, and I guess Adult Swim isn't willing to really push how far they could go in their late night slot (when it comes to nudity, at least).

Well, Comedy Central takes more chances than Adult Swim when it comes to language, as well. After all, they have allowed South Park and The Daily Show to say shit quite often. And on Saturday nights CC airs R rated movies and stand-up films unedited.

See, about that nudity on TV. I live in Canada and we don't have a problem with it here. I mean we have a chanel that doesn't censor out real nudity, so why should they censor a drawing. I don't watch adult swim. I have seen Champloo unedited and thought it was terrific.
