DAT YU-GI-OH! CAST(Except Katsuyuki)! Kaiba, Judai, and the rest from ZeXal and Arc-V.

Anyway, pretty good trailer. I was already planning to watch from the start.

Looks a bit like Magi and Arslan. I hope it doesn't suffer from the usual weaknesses shounen stories tend to have.

The manga looks pretty HQ, and that's a lot of power behind the anime already, given the studio, director and series composition.

It bugs me when series take place in the Middle East and Central Asia (even fictional/fantasy) and have so many light-skinned and even aryan characters for their leads/main characters, so hopefully this won't fall too heavy into that. Given the times and how many titles don't do that, not much excuse for it anymore.
(Also makes me wish Bride's Story would get an anime adaption. ;u; )

I am tentatively interested, but I guess I should check out the magazine and manga for an idea of what to expect.

edit : Ehh. After watching the trailer, I'm not interested, but I am glad to see MAPPA getting more work. Somehow, this made me think of Brave 10 just a little though? I guess how over the top it is for a period setting and all.

I just hope that MAPPA continues to get more work. x'D;

Do you live in the Middle East? because I do. The Middle East is dominated mostly with white people especially in the Levant region and Turkey (where this story takes place). Most people there are White. It's a stereotype that Middle Eastern people are dark skinned. Not saying that there aren't any dark skinned Middle Easterns but they are definitely not the majority at all. I actually get more annoyed when I see dark skinned Middle Easterns all the time in anime because it's mostly not accurate.

Same thoughts! The promo looks promising and the staff really got me excited. I've got fingers crossed for this unusual setup. Very Happy

At least according to his Wikipedia and TV Tropes entries, Ayumu-san was born in Los Angeles. In other words, he is an American (by birth) who has found success working on anime in Japan. He is perhaps the envy of many American fans of anime.

Oh my gosh YES! I've been an avid reader of the manga for a few years, and it's such a joy to read. It's no cliched shonen, this one! I hope the anime translates the incredible art nicely.

This, exactly. Much of Shoukoku no Altair takes place in a fantasy Ottoman Empire, which historically had a variety of people in it, people of all sorts of skin and hair and eye color, and as Ownsin mentions there are in fact a whole lot of white people in it, especially in the modern Turkey region. A number of historical sources about the Middle East and Central Asia describe various ethnic groups as having fair skin and even light hair.

News flash: the "Middle East" is not some sort of ethnic monolith.

I don't, but I know that it's in the ME, and there shouldn't just be pale people. It's like when people make series based in Egypt, and it's all/majority pale people. It's silly, and doesn't make sense for the region as a whole. I understand some areas, at some times, but to be wholy like that? Yeahhhh.

I suppose it's just also the fact that most Middle Eastern people I know are mixed in terms of skintone. Some are light brown, some are light/pale, some are dark brown. But that diversity is never reflected in media (especially animation). Not so much anymore, at least.

And I'm referring specifically to the issue in which all of the main people are always pale, and becomes alienating to the brown and darker skinned audiences. Just like with Latin and South American media. People of these groups with those skintones speak up on those issues.

I never see darker skinned Middle Eastern people as the main characters, but they always seem to fill just the background (and tend to look the same. . .). Out of curiosity, what titles do you know where the main, Middle Eastern characters aren't pale? I'm interested to pick it up and look into it.

One, this story doesn't involve "the Middle East". It involves (the fantasy version of) a very specific place which roughly corresponds to modern day South Balkans and Western Turkey.

Two, you probably don't realize this but few of the characters shown in the trailer are in fact from that area. Most of the story that the anime is probably going to cover takes place in various places in (the fantasy version of) Europe, with one excursion into North Africa, with characters from those places.

(Three, you keep fixating on skin tone as if that was the only sign of different ethnicities, but I guess this is an American thing.)

.......Have you ever ummmm tried looking at the Map where does this take place?. Just like what other said it takes place in the Balkans. People in the Balkans including Turkey as well as Middle East tend to have have lighter skin well mostly in Turkey.

Not just Turkey, but the entire levant area. Which includes Syria, Turkey, Lebanon, Jordan, Palestine, Israel, a part of Iraq and Cyprus. Most people there are white, but you don't see that reflected in anime or movies. Middle Eastern people in movies/tv shows or anime are always depicted with dark skin which really annoys at times because like I said before It's not accurate.
